Welcome to winter semester: Welcome back to a new semester graduate students! Whether you stayed in the area, or traveled for the holidays, we hope that you had a nice and relaxed winter break. While the holiday season may be coming to an end, the winter semester is just beginning, so bundle up and have a great semester Lakers!

Citation Awards Recap: The 2025 Fall Semester ended by recognizing the outstanding achievements of 39 individuals at the Graduate School Citation Awards for Academic Excellence. These awards celebrate graduate students, staff, and faculty members who demonstrate exceptional dedication, leadership, and academic performance. We look forward to celebrating more graduates at the end of this semester.

Career Fair Prep: The GVSU Winter 2026 Career and Internship Fair is approaching. The GVSU Career Center and Graduate School are collaborating to bring you a workshop to help make sure students are prepared to meet with recruiters. Dani Lauer from the Career Center will be joining us to share tips on how to be successful. We will discuss everything from how to introduce yourself, to elevator pitches, to how to follow up after the fair.

3-Minute Thesis Competition: On March 31st, the 3 Minute Thesis Competition is making a return. The 3MT competition provides a unique opportunity to share your work with the broader community in a fun and exciting format. The competition allows any graduate student to present their research in just 3 minutes with the aid of a single slide. Students completing graduate level projects, dissertations, and theses are eligible to participate in the competition. Submission forms are due March 9th at 9:00 a.m.

Etiquette Lunch: This three-course etiquette lunch is the perfect opportunity to finally learn which fork is for salad and which glass is yours. You will explore Continental vs. American style dining, understand the historical origins of dining etiquette, and learn and practice your interpersonal and networking skills, which will be essential as you start looking for internships and jobs. There is a $5.00 fee for each attendee to reserve their seat. Space is limited. The RSVP deadline is February 9th at 11:59pm.

The Graduate Student Within the Assistantship: Maddie Hartz is a graduate student in the School Psychology program and a Teaching Assistant for the course School Psychology Assessment 1. She assists in creating discussion activities for the class and in group collaborative work. As someone who was in the class last year, Maddie felt that she could see herself helping other students succeed. You can learn more about Maddie on our Student Success Page.
