Dear Wagner Alumni,
Happy New Year, and welcome to my first bulletin of 2024. Our Spring semester is underway and things are off to an exciting start.
As you know, this summer, Wagner will be saying goodbye to the Puck Building and moving to our new home at 105 East 17th Street. In these monthly emails from me, you’ll see move news so you can follow along with us as we prepare for Wagner’s next chapter. Right now, the construction team is “breaking ground” at the 17th Street site, beginning construction and renovation. Concurrently, we continue to work on our plans for signage, furniture, and programming in our new space.
Here’s what else is happening…
- Amid increased interest in workers’ rights, we’ve launched the NYU Wagner Labor Initiative, a new hub of research and practice that will focus on the role and powers of governments to protect and advance workers’ rights, particularly at the state and local levels, led by Terri Gerstein who arrived at NYU last month.
- Congratulations to Professor Martha Stark who was named to Mayor Adams’ panel on NYC budget.
- Please join us for a conversation between Eric Klinenberg and Tom Sugrue, who will discuss Klinenberg's new book, 2020: One City, Seven People, and the Year Everything Changed. This event is presented by NYU Wagner and the NYU Urban Initiative, RSVP to attend.
- The inaugural NYU Migration Network Public Conversation Series kicks off next month with Asian Americans and the Curse of Competence. These public conversations, held monthly on select Thursdays over the semester, bring together scholars, artists, and practitioners for cross-disciplinary exchanges to develop and refine understandings of migration and mobility, its histories, and its political stakes. The Public Conversations open with a short reception for the speakers and the broader NYU community at 5:00pm. The conversation will follow at 6:00pm. NYU Wagner is delighted to co-sponsor alongside the Asian/Pacific/American Institute and NYU’s Department of Sociology.
- Save-the-Date: NYU Wagner’s 2024 Convocation ceremony will be taking place on Thursday, May 23 at City Center! The ceremony details will be shared later in the Spring semester, for questions please contact wagner.convocation@nyu.edu.
- Check out our spring events docket for interesting convenings, panels, talks, and informal “WagChats” with faculty.
