The 2020 Census will provide a basis for reapportioning Congressional seats, redistricting, and distributing billions of dollars in federal funding to support vital programs at the state, county, and community levels. People experiencing homelessness are at risk of being undercounted in census data and being underrepresented when receiving funding for supportive services and programs.

Council CEO Bobby Watts and Senior Director of Policy Dr. Barbara DiPietro lent their perspectives to a MarketWatch article exploring how some hospitals and insurers are investing in housing for people without homes to help reduce health care costs. Read the story to learn about the critical benefits and cost savings of health care-driven housing interventions.
Additionally, Watts recently shared three key points on homelessness in a plenary presentation at the National Alliance to End Homelessness's Solutions for Individual Homeless Adults Conference in Oakland, CA. The crisis of homelessness "is a moral issue," Watts said, stressing the importance of advocacy. "This is a matter of life and death, and for the very soul of our nation." APHA Call for Papers on Multimorbidity in Homeless Populations Extended: Submissions Due March 15
| |
People without homes often face multiple chronic medical conditions and multimorbidity that present complex challenges in care coordination. Medical Care, the official publication of the Medical Care Section of the American Public Health Association, has extended its call for papers for a special issue on multimorbidity among homeless populations.
Topics related to models of care, care coordination, and unique medical and social determinants of health among individuals experiencing homelessness are welcome. Homelessness that affects the full life cycle of individuals, including youth, adults, and the elderly is of particular interest. Submissions are due March 15.
