Fall 2017: Our Students' Perspective

As the library begins to fill up with students preparing for finals, we wanted to take a moment to look back upon the Fall Semester from the perspective of our own Library Student Ambassadors. Each of the stories below highlight some of the innovative and engaging programs we offer at the William H. Hannon Library. We hope you enjoy this retrospective! And to all our friends and colleagues, the LMU community, and you, dear readers: we wish you the best this holiday season.

What You Missed

Faculty Pub Night with Kayoko Okada

Our first Faculty Pub Night of the Fall 2017 semester featured Kayoko Okada, Assistant Professor of Psychology, who spoke about her recent project, fMRI studies of American Sign Language. Library student ambassador Jaida Macklin gives us the scoop.

The Fall 2017 Archives Opening

In collaboration with the Academy of Catholic Thought and Imagination, we launched the 2017 Fall Archives and Special Collections Exhibition, "Tales of Mystery and Imagination." Library student ambassador Fabio Cabezas sums up the evening's speakers and festivities.

Banned Books Week

In September, library staff and student ambassadors performed a choral reading of I am Jazz, a book that has been banned for its "dangerous" content, to celebrate our freedom to read widely. Library student ambassador Taylor Clark tells us what you may have missed.

Faculty Pub Night with Sina Kramer

In October, Sina Kramer spoke about her recent publication, Excluded Within: The (Un)Intelligibility of Radical Political Actors. Kramer is Assistant Professor of Women's Studies at LMU. Student ambassador Cascina Caradonna tells us more about Kramer's book and the discussion that followed.

The Haunting of Hannon Library V

For a fifth year in a row, we worked with the faculty and students of LMU's Theatre Arts program to haunt the stacks of the library. Library student ambassador Cynthia Garcia gives us part 1 of what you missed. Jaida Macklin gives us part 2

Faculty Pub Night with Greg Ruzzin

In November, Greg Ruzzin, Rebecca Herr-Stephenson, Brian Kotowski, and Victoria Graf told us about their innovative transmedia project, The Magic Chair. Greg also spoke about the process of making a documentary. Library student ambassador Grace Smith tells us more.

The LMU Human Library

In partnership with the Office for International Students and Scholars as part of WorldFest 2017, we hosted our fifth LMU Human Library. Attendees had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with members of our community about their international experiences and perspectives. Evie Wilson offers us a slice of that experience.
