MEET DR. FAGAN
Humanities teacher Kara Fagan grew up in Arlington, Virginia, but has spent the last fifteen years in New England and the Midwest. She attended Colby College, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in English and American Studies. After attending Colby, and because her mom moved to the Mid Coast region, she considers Maine a second home.
After college, Dr. Fagan worked at Stoneleigh-Burnham School, where she taught English and Humanities and coached Varsity Field Hockey and Softball. She then moved to Iowa City where she earned a Masters and Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Iowa.
Her research interests include feminist film theory, gender and sexuality studies, and the cultural history of sport and physicality. Her dissertation examined depictions of female athleticism in Classic Hollywood, specifically focusing on the ways women’s active bodies are framed and contained.
A field hockey goalie and softball catcher in high school, Dr. Fagan continued to play softball at Colby. More recently though, she's taken up pickleball, a sport that is a cross between tennis, badminton and ping pong and is played with a paddle and wiffle ball.
Her favorite season is fall, especially in the Pioneer Valley and when she has an ample supply of hot cider and donuts. Last but not least, she loves her two oddball cats, elder-states-kitty Scout and her gangly younger brother, Orion.
