In addition, the Dominican Central Province has reassigned Campus Ministry Director Fr. Dennis Woerter, O.P. '86 (at right) to the St. Paul Center at Indiana University, effective July 1st. "I will be an associate pastor, campus minister, and will coordinate their Hispanic ministry," says Fr. D, who also coached soccer. "I have been here seven years, which is a long time for a Dominican to be anywhere! This has been an absolutely wonderful ministry, one I will miss, but it is time to move on. We must remember that nothing is permanent in the Order."

FOREVER FRIARS:
The Late Frank Capitanini '50
Fenwick alumnus and restaurateur Franklin Delano Captinanini '50 passed away at age 85 in April 2018. For more than 70 years, Frank and his brother, Raymond '53, were the faces of the famed Italian Village restaurants in downtown Chicago. Alumni sons, Frank II '78 and Al '81, along with daughters Gina and Lisa, are naming the school's current Italian classroom (Room 14) in honor of their late father. The family also has created an endowed scholarship in recognition of his long affiliation with Fenwick. The fund will provide tuition assistance for a student in need.

Fenwick TEAMS Places First in Illinois!
The Fenwick TEAMS team placed first in Illinois among large, selective schools. Forty-eight Friars competed at IIT this spring. Our A Team ranks an impressive fifth internationally, while C Team placed fourth in state as well. Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS) is an annual contest for middle and high school students designed to help them discover their potential for engineering. Twenty-nine schools competed at the varsity level.
“The schools that we lost to on the international level for large selective schools are The Taft School (Connecticut), The Harker School (California), The Koc School (Turkey) and Hoover High School (Alabama),” reports TEAMS Moderator/Math Teacher and Fenwick alumnus Kevin Roche ’05. “Hats off to The Hoover School for having the highest score in the nation among any level. We beat out many of other U.S. schools with incredible reputations, such as the Mary Institute [St. Louis], Walnut Hills High School [Cincinnati] and Norfolk Academy [Virginia],” Mr. Roche notes. Read more.
FACULTY FOCUS:
German Teacher Alison Strom
Frau Strom is finishing her 8th year of teaching at Fenwick. The mother of quadruplets (now 2) keeps busy at home as well!
What is your educational background?

AS: BAT – University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; MA – University of Wisconsin at Madison

What did you do prior to becoming a teacher at Fenwick?

AS: While in graduate school, I taught German 101 as a teaching assistant and also worked full time as a German and Spanish teacher at a local middle school.

What are you currently reading for enjoyment?

AS: Although I love reading, life is pretty busy these days. When I do get a chance to read, I read Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier and More Secure Kids.
What interests do you pursue outside of the classroom?

AS: With two-year-old quadruplets at home, I don’t have much free time. But I love everything about the beautiful chaos of our home and life as a family of six. Spending time with my husband and babies brings me so much joy. Our favorite thing to do is go on long walks with our huge quad stroller. We meet so many new friends this way, as everyone wants to know who we are and what we are doing with such a monster-size stroller!

Fenwick Graduation: 2016
Hometown: Chicago
Grade School: John Spry Community School
Recent School:  Michigan State University
Major: Advertising Management with a minor in Entrepreneurship & Innovation

Summer Internship: Summer after my freshman year I worked for an advertising agency called 8 Days A Week, Inc. as an Event Administrative Assistant. It introduced me to the field of event marketing and promotions. Ever since, I’ve worked as an independent contractor for agencies to represent brands at events. My favorite has been representing Nissan at Michigan State basketball games!

Career aspirations: I’d like to focus on experiential marketing and brand experience. In the future, hopefully establish my own agency!

JONATHON KULHANEK
Fenwick Graduation: 2017
Hometown: Riverside, IL
Grade School: St. Mary School (Riverside)
Current School:  University of Tampa (Tampa, FL)
Major: Biology-Pre-Med/Pre-Dental (Honors Program)

Internship: I intern as an Undergraduate Research Assistant in the Genetics program at the University of Tampa and study Intrinsically Disordered Proteins or IDPs. This program entails doing research, attending conferences and being a guest speaker to report my findings.

Career aspirations: As of now, my career aspiration is to become a dentist like both of my parents. Currently, I am majoring in biology with intentions for medical or dental school. Since professional school admittance is very competitive, I am considering double-majoring in biology and bhemistry. Chemistry may open more job opportunities in pharmaceutical and environmental companies. Personally, I believe working with patients or behind the scenes of science will help make a difference in other people's lives.

MORE "COLLEGIATE FRIARS"
Catching Up With:
Former English Teacher Peter Bostock, PhD.
Dr. B (above with his wife in Italy) has been retired from teaching young Friars for more than 10 years. He looks back with fondness at the three decades he spent at Fenwick.
Dr. B (left) canoeing with a friend last summer on the Kishwaukee River.
How many years were you at Fenwick (and when)?

PB: I was at Fenwick from 1979 until 2008: 29 years. When I arrived at the hallowed halls I thought I’d dropped into heaven (compared to the previous two years of my teaching life).

What was your role / what classes did you teach?

PB: I was assigned to teach freshman English in ’79. Mr Duane Langenderfer (‘Derf’) and I shared the freshman English between us: four classes each in Room 1 with about 30 students in each class. The emphasis was on grammar, writing and English literature.

Much to my disappointment, the Head of the English Department assigned me to teach two sophomore and two senior classes the following year. I was disappointed because I’d had such a wonderful year I figured my ‘heaven’ would continue with freshmen. (Ah, man proposes and God disposes!)
