The Science of Cow Handling Made Practical |
Low-stress handling of dairy cattle leverages their natural instincts to direct their movement calmly. Handler positioning relative to the imaginary flight zone and point of balance drives cows’ direction without physical force. Implementing these low-stress methods reduces injuries to livestock and people, maintains milk let-down efficiency, and protects consumer trust in dairy cattle care standards.

Milk Components for Cheese Success
Join dairy chemist, John Lucey, as he explores why the ideal butterfat-to-protein ratio is critical for cheesemaking efficiency and product quality. He will also discuss how variations in milk fatty acid profiles influence dairy product characteristics and processing performance. In addition, Manuel Peña and Katelyn Goldsmith will break down the science behind feeding dairy cows for optimal milk protein production, sharing practical nutrition and herd management strategies, including balancing rumen degradable and undegradable protein (RDP and RUP) and monitoring milk urea nitrogen (MUN), to help producers maximize protein yield and milk value.

Cultivating Your Farm's Future |
Wisconsin Extension has developed an interactive program, Cultivating Your Farm’s Future and a corresponding workbook that provides tools and resources for producers to begin the succession planning process.
How will your farm operate in the future when the owner retires or is gone?
Are you currently working with another generation who may be questioning their role in the future of the farm business or are you yourself questioning your current role?
This program will help you with those questions.

The University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension is offering a Fall/Winter series of Shoebox to Strategy: Organizing Your Farm Legacy. This online workshop series is designed to help farm families move from the “I need to do this someday” mindset to having their vital records fully organized and ready for the future.
With a start date of Friday, November 13, 2026, the series provides a step-by-step roadmap for farm owners and successors to build a centralized collection of essential legal, financial, and personal documents. By moving vital records from the proverbial “shoebox” into a strategic binder and spreadsheet, families can better protect their operations in the event of an accident, illness, or untimely death.

Cost of Raising Heifers Survey |
Raising dairy calves and replacement heifers is a major expense for Wisconsin dairies; tracking these costs and benchmarking against peers supports better management decisions. Periodically, Wisconsin Extension Educators have collected farm level data to track these costs. Extension is currently seeking this information and needs your help. If you are interested in having a dairy educator reach out to you, please provide your contact information by clicking the button below.
