MARCH VOLUNTEERING
Spring is in the air!
Greetings, Volunteers!

March is here, and while we'll miss our favorite winter activities, we're excited for our upcoming spring season! We have a number of volunteer opportunities, but we are always looking or more!

If you, or someone you know works for an organization or event that focuses on food, agriculture, sustainability or the environment and are looking for volunteers please don't hesitate to reach out!

As always, to sign up for an event this month and receive a month of free Garbage to Garden service, RSVP by email, and we will help answer any questions you may have. Remember, events are first-come, first-serve.

Happy Composting,

Produce Distributions
with the Locker Project

Memorial Middle School
Thursday, March 5, 1:00 – 2:45pm

Presumpscot Elementary School
Wednesday, March 4, 4:00 – 5:30pm
Wednesday, March 18, 4:00 - 5:30pm
Deering High School
Thursday, March 26, 1:30 – 3:00pm

The Locker Project manages food pantries in schools, providing food for children who are food-insecure to take food home with them. Join the Locker Project this month to help distribute fresh produce and non-perishable food items.
Volunteers help arrange produce and groceries on tables, then assist students and parents with bagging the food up to take home. You will be a welcoming presence, making sure people know they are invited to take food. Everyone is invited to bring food home with them. This a great way to de-stigmatize free food distributions, particularly in the case of fresh food that would otherwise get wasted.

Email Steve to RSVP to distribute food with the Locker Project!

In addition, they also organize medical missions to Southeast Asia and Africa for doctors, nurses, and students. Here is a list of some of their needs:
Macrosorting - opening bags and boxes and sorting items into general category bins
Microsorting - further sorting general category bins into bins of more restrictive categories
Counting, bagging, and labeling similar items
Transferring like liquids to create full containers
Creating kits of supplies (respiratory kits, surgical kits, birthing kits, etc.)
Packing, sealing and labeling boxes for shipment

Shovel Snow for the Elderly
Portland Neighborhoods
Volunteers are asked to shovel the steps and a path from the front door to the sidewalk, as well as the sidewalk in front of the property. They are not asked to shovel the entire driveway or clear snow from roofs. The idea is to create a path which allows the senior citizen, emergency response personnel, Meals on Wheels delivery people, mail carriers, and other visitors to get in and out of the house safely. Once a volunteer receives an assignment, they agree to shovel for that same elderly resident (s) after each snowstorm.

This month, MCHPP could use volunteers to help pick up donations, and afternoon volunteers for the food bank & food pantry.
