Apple Festival is next weekend!

October 15 & 16 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm

A family event for all ages, UBC Apple Festival celebrates one of BC’s favourite fruits. From learning about the diversity of apples to tasting rare and unusual varieties, Apple Festival is a great opportunity to discover more about this delicious fruit.

Thank you for supporting our community fundraising event. Your visit supports education, research, conservation, and public display at UBC Botanical Garden. We can’t wait to see you at Apple Festival 2022, our first in-person festival since 2019.

To make sure we deliver a great experience, we are limiting ticket sales and only selling tickets online. Buy your tickets now to avoid disappointment.

October is often the best month to see berries and other colourful fruits in the Botanical Garden, and—hungry birds notwithstanding—2022 will go down as an impressive year for berry viewing. The mountain ashes and whitebeams (Sorbus and Aria, respectively)—are front and centre in showing off their beautiful fruits. Note that the fruits of these plants are known colloquially as berries, but technically, they are pomes (like apples and pears).

On Wednesday, November 9th, Gary Lewis of Phoenix Perennials and UBC alumnus (M.Sc. Department of Botany) will be doing a book signing of his new ground cover encyclopedia at UBC Botanical Garden's Shop in the Garden and Garden Centre at 11:30 am. Gary has offered to donate 10% of the book purchases to UBC Botanical Garden for pre-ordered books by UBC Botanical Garden supporters, and books sold at the book signing. However, to make sure Gary brings enough books to meet demand and to maximize the donation to the Garden, we highly recommend that you place a pre-order now.

Holiday gift alert! At the time of the book signing, there will be just six and a half weeks until Christmas, and every gardener in your life will need a copy!

Here’s how to pre-order:

1. Visit www.phoenixperennials.com ( also linked below). Scroll down and click on the image of the book cover.

2. Place your order online. When checking out, put “UBC” in the Notes Field. This is how Phoenix will identify your order and make a donation on your behalf.

3. Gary will bring your copy (or copies!) to the book signing for you to pick up. If you can’t make it to the signing, Gary will leave your copies at the Shop in the Garden at UBC Botanical Garden for you to pick up later during regular opening hours.

4. If you would like a special message added to your signed copy, you can also type instructions into this same Notes field.
