Convocation with Speaker Judy Shepard
Tuesday, September 12 - 10:50-11:50 A.M. - WEST GYM

Our first all-school convocation of this school year is an opportunity to hear from a renowned speaker with a powerful story about facing hatred and meeting it with love in action. It’s also a significant piece of a dialogue that we will work to foster throughout this semester on a school-wide basis, on this very relevant topic.
Judy Shepard is the mother of Matthew Shepard, who was a college student when he was murdered in 1998 in Laramie, Wyoming, in an anti-gay hate crime. In response, Judy and her husband started the Matthew Shepard Foundation. You can learn more about Matthew’s story and the Foundation’s work here.
During the days prior to the September 12 convocation, students will view an introductory video and learn more about the background in their Religious Studies classes. Students who are not currently enrolled in Religious Studies will have opportunities to get this same information in the Efroymson Auditorium during any of the three PRTs on Monday, September 11.
At the convocation, Mrs. Shepard will address the school for 30-40 minutes, followed by an open question period for the students. At noon, Mrs. Shepard will have lunch and conversation with the cast of The Laramie Project, Brebeuf’s fall play, which is about the town in the aftermath of the crime. Our production of The Laramie Project will take place on October 27-28 in the Efroymson Auditorium, and tickets will be available online in early October.
In the days following the convocation, Religious Studies classes will again lead class discussions for students to process what they heard. And, on Tuesday, September 19, Brebeuf’s Gender & Sexuality Alliance student club will sponsor a Diversity Dialogue in the Efroymson Auditorium during period 4 (10:10-11:10 a.m.), which will give students a forum for further dialogue and learning on these issues.
We look forward to the entire community engaging in these opportunities and to put what we learn into action.

BREBEUF JESUIT WILL ONCE AGAIN SERVE AS A HOST FOR THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS OF INDIANA'S EUNICE KENNEDY SHRIVER GAMES on September 10.

Brebeuf Jesuit is estatic to once again welcome the more than 2,100 Special Olympics athletes from across Indiana making the trip to Indianapolis for state-level competitions on September 10.
Delegations representing 48 Special Olympics county programs from across the state will participate in the organization’s annual Eunice Kennedy Shriver (EKS) Games, named in honor of the Special Olympics founder and 2017 Arthur Ashe Courage Award winner. A total of 2,126 athletes with intellectual disabilities are registered for one or more of the events.
The 2017 EKS Games begin Sunday, September 10 on our campus, where more than 1,600 athletes, coaches, and partners will take part in state competitions for volleyball, flag football, corn toss, and distance run/walk. Competition and other activities are scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Approximately 400 Brebeuf Jesuit students will again volunteer at the event, led the Student Athletic Leadership Team (SALT)—which annually works with Special Olympics Indiana staff to plan and execute all facets of the day.
“The student leaders at Brebeuf Jesuit are among the brightest and most dedicated group of volunteers that we have the pleasure of working with each year,” Special Olympics Indiana President and CEO Michael Furnish said. “Their commitment to serving Special Olympics athletes and providing them a fantastic experience through this event is remarkable—and we are, as always, incredibly grateful for their support.”

NOTES ON STUDENT DROPOFF AND PICKUP FOR PARENTS

To help to ensure that all are safe during our busiest times on campus, student dropoff and pickup, and to help make this time more efficient for everyone, some helpful guidelines are listed below.
Please DO
  • Drive Slowly!
  • Pull as far eastward as possible in the drive.
  • Pick up your student in the PickUp Zone (indicated by an orange cone).
  • After dropoff, please drive through the parking lot to turn around and head into the westward direction to exit.
Please Do Not:
  • Drop off your student in the center lane.
  • Make any type of U-turn. This includes pulling into a parking spot to turn around.
  • Ask your students to find your vehicle in the drive or near 86th Street
Brebeuf Jesuit is always happy to welcome you to campus for meetings or to pick up gear in the Spirit Store.  Please make sure to park in the Visitor Lot for these trips, as the numbered spots are reserved for faculty/staff.

Brebeuf jesuit 2017 president's medal recipients

The entire Brebeuf Jesuit community is invited to join Father Jack Dennis, S.J. to celebrate and honor Tom and Melissa Pence as the 2017 President’s Medal Recipients. The celebration will take place on November 9, 2017 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
As leaders in the Indianapolis community and supportive parents of Andrew, Jennifer, Samuel, Danae, Naomi, Tallal, and two grandchildren Noah and Remy, Tom and Melissa have demonstrated a deep commitment to Jesuit education through role model worthy volunteer involvement in their community, children's lives, and in support of the students, faculty and staff at Brebeuf Jesuit.
Tom served as a Brebeuf Jesuit Trustee from 2009-2016 where he chaired the Investment Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, College Counseling Task Force Committee and was a member of the Finance Committee. Together, Tom and Melissa are Magis Society members, have established an endowed scholarship fund to support financial aid, and supported the Kite Wellness Center and Leading the Way capital campaigns with leadership gifts.
In addition to volunteer efforts at Brebeuf, they live our motto of Men and Women for Others with their service and dedication to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Eskenazi Health Foundation Board of Directors, and Shepard Community Center. They are active members at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
Tom is one of the area’s most renowned stock pickers and has recently joined Stifel Nicolaus & Company after 16 years as managing partner and portfolio manager with Wells Capital Management. Tom serves Stifel as a Managing Director.

Faculty/Staff Spotlight

Mrs. beth newman '18

How many years have you been at Brebeuf and in what capacities?
I’m a College Counselor and am going into my 11th year at Brebeuf. I worked at Brebeuf from 1999-2004 and happily returned in the fall of 2012.
What's your favorite thing about the role you play at Brebeuf?
I feel extremely fortunate to be working with students and parents during such a formative time in a student’s life.  It's personally rewarding to see them successfully navigate the college admissions process and be so excited about taking the next step in their young lives.
What makes Brebeuf different from other area high schools?
Brebeuf’s sense of community is truly special and so strong that it feels like an extended family.  It’s a place where everyone is accepted, nurtured and loved, and a place where students are encouraged to reach their fullest potential.
Describe a memorable moment from your time at Brebeuf.
I have experienced so many wonderful instances where students have texted or come into my office to share the good news with me that they were admitted to their college of choice.  These are priceless moments that I am grateful to get to share with them.
If one of your friends was considering sending their child to Brebeuf, what would you tell them?
I would tell them that Brebeuf is not only a school that offers academic rigor but is also a place where their child will be cared for and encouraged to grow. Their child will be challenged to develop personal responsibility and to mature into a young person who will want to make a positive difference in the world.
What's something that challenges you, and how do you navigate that challenge?
It can be challenging to present the realities of highly selective college admissions. It’s important to navigate this challenge by remaining focused on all of the options that are available and encourage students to take advantage of them.
Who inspires you?
I’m inspired by the good in others. The students I get to work with astound me with their incredible young minds and desire to make a positive impact on the world.  Their potential provides me with a deep sense of hope.
What do you like to do in your spare time, when not working at Brebeuf?
I love to walk outdoors. I find it fortifying and grounding to hike a trail in the woods or a path along the water. I also love to read and listen to interviews and/or podcasts.  And most of all, I love being with my two incredible kids and husband.
Tell us something about you that most people don’t know...
I’m from the state of Delaware and went to the University of Virginia, where I played volleyball.  Both are dear to me and hold a very special place in my heart.

Brebeuf Jesuit Students Attend Center for Leadership Development's 10th Annual College Prep Conference

On Saturday, August 26, students from Brebeuf Jesuit attended the Center for Leadership Development 10th Annual College Prep Conference/Fair.
Students and parents attended informative sessions that addressed college issues ranging from earning scholarships, SAT/ACT prep, to parent seminars on the college admission process.  Attendees also had the pleasure to hear inspiring words from Judge Tanya Walton Pratt, who is the first African American federal judge in the history of Indiana. She also received a gracious and rousing introduction from Brebeuf junior and CLD student, Calyn Coleman.
Over 30 colleges and universities were present at the fair and students were able to network and receive valuable information and insight from the representatives. Brebeuf had a contingent of over 20 students, many of whom were current CLD students or graduates. The Center for Leadership Development (CLD) is a locally based program and has been in existence for over 40 years. Its mission is to foster the advancement of youth, specifically students of color, in Central Indiana as future professional, business, and community leaders, by offering programming to challenge them personally and educationally. Please join us in congratulating all Brebeuf attendees!
