Our tradition pays a good deal of attention to the experience of strangeness, and to the feelings of the stranger. We are told, over and over, “Do not oppress the stranger, for you yourselves were strangers in the land of Egypt.” What does it mean to feel like we are not where we belong, and what is it to persist despite this feeling? Where does the Jewish emphasis on the strange and the stranger begin?

CENTENNIAL STORY Pioneering Jewish Studies Historian Formed Foundation at Hebrew College Paula Hyman z”l was a trail-blazing historian of modern French Jewry and the history of Jewish women; a feminist activist and pioneer of Jewish feminism; and a mentor to generations of students at Columbia University; the Jewish Theological Seminary; and Yale University. Her scholarship, teaching, and activism, her students say, shaped the academic discipline of Jewish studies, and transformed how we view the Jewish past and present. But her own foundation, she always said, came from her time at Hebrew (Teachers) College.

Rabbi Tiferet Berenbaum `13 Receives Pomegranate Prize
On October 25, Hebrew College alumna Rabbi Tiferet Berenbaum was one of five Jewish educators to receive The Covenant Foundation's 2021 Pomegranate Prize, given to passionate, emerging leaders in Jewish education. "We are kvelling! We are so proud of our colleague and alum Rabbi Tiferet Berenbaum for receiving this Prize for her inspiring, life-giving, world-changing work as a Jewish educator." —Hebrew College President Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld.
