University of New Orleans history professor Mary Niall Mitchell, who is director of the Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies at UNO, has been awarded a nearly $55,000 grant to help create an exhibit at the Whitney Plantation Museum that will include a specialized tour and curriculum material.

On Wednesday, February 8th, the School of Education and DEI@UNO presented “Supporting Black Students in New Orleans: Perspectives of Educational Leaders,” featuring these local education notables as panelists: Dr. Alice Cryler-Sumler, School Counseling & Student Support Specialist, St. Charles Parish; Dr. Bennetta Horne, Assistant Dean for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, Tulane University School of Medicine; Brittany Smith, Principal, Hynes Charter School-UNO; Dr. Rolland Bullard, Vice President for Student Success, Dillard University; and Dr. Sharon Clark, School Director, Sophie B. Wright High School.

As part of her goal to expand the number of UNO Black author webinars on topics related to Social/Financial/Environmental Justice, associate professor Michelle M. Thompson has confirmed that Majora Carter will present to her spring 2023 URBN 4100/5100 Gentrification in Historic Districts course, PLUS and to students in the Ph.D. in Justice Studies program. The discussion will be later in the spring after Thompson’s students have read Majora's book, "Reclaiming Your Community: You Don’t Have to Move out of Your Neighborhood to Live in a Better One."

PLUS associate professor Michelle M. Thompson and her husband Kevin Thompson created Cross World Africa in 2008. She still serves as a volunteer and assists with specific on-going projects. This month, Michelle and Kevin separately launched a Thompson Family Student-Athlete Scholarship Program that focuses on needy and talented girls entering Kenyan high schools. Their goal is to provide support for their promising athletic abilities coupled with academic competency. Many of the students in the Cross World Africa Scholarship Project also seek higher education in the United States.

UNO's Justin Maxwell, associate professor of playwriting, has been keeping busy lately. His book tentatively titled "The Playwright's Toolbox: How to Build and Fix New Plays" is under contract with Applause Books. It should be on shelves in spring 2024. In addition, his play "Your Lithopedion" will be available this May as a stand-alone book by Next Stages Press. Congratulations on both publications!

Your contributions will enable UNO students to participate in an exciting simulation of United Nations activity involving thousands of students to be held in New York City in March. There, our many debating and resolution-writing sessions will culminate in a final meeting in the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations headquarters building itself. Gifts will help fund airfare, lodging and conference costs to allow more students to attend this life-changing event.

The talk will be moderated by FCCP Executive Director LaShanda A. Jackson and will feature Dr. Raphael Cassimere, Jr., UNO professor of American Constitutional and African-American History.

Dr. Eva Pfanzelter, visiting professor in the Department of History and Philosophy, will address the topic “History and (Digital) Game Studies” at 12:30 p.m. on March 8th in the International Center, Student Lounge, Room IC 133.
