| Dear Partner in Ministry,
This fall will be my first not in any sort of degree program. My first fall without the excitement of picking out new notebooks and pens, buying textbooks, and finding the rhythm of a school year. After nearly 30 years as a student, this really is a nice change of pace. And yet, I still feel the excitement of the new school year. As I write this from my apartment on campus at Georgetown (where I live as a Residential Minister), I can hear the cars unloading first year belongings and the excited RAs cheering welcomes. It's impossible to ignore the excitement of a new school year. The rest of the students will move in by Sunday, and classes start next Wednesday.
I guess my years as a "professional student," as my dad used to tease, left a mark on me because I can't seem to avoid the school year rhythm. My love of students, and my connection to Georgetown led me to take on a new project at GPC. Throughout this academic year (August to May) I'll lead a small group thinking about how to be good neighbors to Georgetown University. We'll be part of a cohort through an organization called The Vinery, with churches from Austin, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Chapel Hill all wrestling with how to best engage with the university in our neighborhoods. The result might be a new campus ministry for Georgetown students, or a creative way to serve faculty and staff, or something else entirely.
If this project speaks to you and you'd like to join this team, please let me know (it will be about 4-6 hours of work per month). Maybe you're currently an undergraduate or graduate student at Georgetown. Maybe you're an alum, or a faculty or staff member. Maybe you live in the neighborhood and have always wanted to engage more with students. Maybe you're feeling a stirring, a calling, to work with the Georgetown University community. If so, please join us!
Take good care,
Grace
