Tufts Student Health Insurance Requirements and Optional Tuition Insurance

Dear Parents and Families,

We hope your summer is off to a great start, and we look forward to welcoming your students back to Tufts in the fall. 

We are writing to remind you that all Tufts students are required to have health insurance (it’s a Massachusetts state law).

All students are automatically enrolled in and billed for the Tufts Student Health Insurance Plan. 

If your student is covered by a separate policy through a U.S.-based insurance company that meets Massachusetts requirements, including minimum creditable coverage standards required under state law, you may apply for a waiver by July 31 and receive a credit to your account, if the waiver is approved.

Many international insurance plans––such as ISO, WellAway, Medicover, AIG, and Seven Corners––often do not meet Massachusetts’ health insurance requirements and minimum creditable coverage standards, even if they include a U.S. claims address.

Students with comparable health insurance coverage can apply for a waiver of the university’s plan between now and July 31, 2026 in the Student Information System (SIS). A waiver must be completed annually. If you had a waiver this past year, it is simple to submit your waiver again in SIS. Note: Your student can provide you with “Invited Viewer” access to their SIS account and the student health insurance waiver.

If you do not request a waiver by July 31, 2026, you will be charged for the student health insurance for this year. Disenrollment and/or refunds are not available after July 31. Voluntary disenrollment is only available upon entering the armed forces.

Tuition insurance offers financial protection in case of a medical withdrawal. It will be available for fall and spring enrollment later this summer via the A.W.G. Dewar website. This insurance is separate from health insurance and only applies to tuition fees in the event of a medical withdrawal. Enrollment must be before the first day of classes on September 8, 2026.
