25 Years of Healing at CHKD’s Child Advocacy Center |
Since 1998, CHKD's Child Advocacy Center has provided expert forensic, mental health, and advocacy services to children who may have experienced maltreatment and trauma. As the largest Child Advocacy Center in Virginia, accredited through the National Children’s Alliance, the center served over 2,600 children last year.
With a mission centered on enhancing the well-being of children and families in cases of suspected maltreatment, the Child Advocacy Center aims to promote wellness, support justice and equity, and prevent re-traumatization. The Child Advocacy Center upholds the highest standards of professionalism by providing compassionate, evidence-based care tailored to the individual needs of children and their families. The Child Advocacy Center offers comprehensive victim-centered services, including case coordination, advocacy, forensic interviews, and mental health and medical services. The center also operates a program to help underage victims of sexual victimization and those at risk for exploitation.
The CHKD Child Advocacy Center was one of the first in the nation to collaborate with multiple agencies to provide a child-centered focus of care. Today, more than 850 Children’s Advocacy Centers across the country operate with the same model.
