Roo Connection

Proud to Be a Roo

New Video Featuring Our Resilient Roos

The past year has been unlike any other. But we know what’s strong enough to overcome even a global pandemic: YOU. The pandemic hasn’t put your dreams on hold. In fact, for so many of you it’s only made you more determined to succeed.
College may look a little different than it did a year ago, but our Roos are still doing what they do best: learning, exploring, making friends and creating a new home at UMKC. We’re proud to show off our UMKC spirit with this video created exclusively by faculty, staff and students. Even during a pandemic, you continue to amaze us with your strength and perseverance.

Give Feedback on UMKC Master Plan

Recently you received an email about UMKC initiating a new master plan process for the physical environment of our two campuses. The master plan focuses on the physical environment of the campus – buildings and grounds – and how it aligns with the UMKC Strategic Plan to maximize the efficient use of space and plan for short and long-term needs, such as housing and the extension of the street car to campus.
Your initial opportunity to participate in this process will be coming soon through a survey.

Academics

Pre-Med Biology Student Lands Internship at Stowers Institute and Publishes Article in Scientific Journal

Emily Wesley has always been fascinated by science. Some of her most vivid childhood memories are of reading infographic books about the human body and creating quizzes for her parents from her nature encyclopedia.
Wesley lost both her parents at a young age; her mother died from brain cancer when she was 8 years old and her father died from a stroke when she was 15. While she says she still struggles with grief, she was inspired by one of the doctors who was caring for her father while he was in the hospital, which further cemented her resolve to study medicine and science. Today she has a great internship at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, founded a Pre-Med Peer Mentoring Program at UMKC and was first author on a paper in the research magazine Chromosoma, a significant achievement for an undergraduate researcher.
“During my time at UMKC, I have learned that success is obtained through hard work and determination. I’ve reached out to people who have been willing to mentor me and I’ve learned that I can use my time and energy to help others. I struggle with grief daily, but I find meaning through the struggle and tackle every day with the passion and strength that my parents instilled in me.”

“One of the best aspects of the biology program is the tremendous support that we feel from our professors. It’s very inspiring to receive this sort of care and support from professors and to always have someone rooting for us and our success.”

– Emily Wesley, junior, pre-med biology
