Year in Review: 2024 GW Cancer Center Contributions to Patient Navigation Advancement |

The GW Cancer Center's focus on advancing patient navigation continued in 2024, as illustrated by the following contributions to the field.

- GW Cancer Center developed a free 30-minute online training on new patient navigation billing codes: Special Topics in Patient Navigation: Getting Paid for Patient Navigation

GW Cancer Center revised its ten-year old Oncology Patient Navigation Training: The Fundamentals with colleagues from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Association of Cancer Care Centers, the Patient Advocate Foundation, the Commission on Cancer, Susan G. Komen, the Academy of Oncology Nurse and Patient Navigators, the LGBT Cancer Network, the Geographic Health Equity Alliance, Nuestras Voces Adelante, Navigacion de Pacientes International, Gallaudet University, the Self-Made Health Network, the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board, the American Samoa Cancer Coalition, and Navigation Advisors

In a recent article in the Journal of Navigation & Survivorship (JONS), Jeanne Silva noted that RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute, the largest healthcare system in New Jersey, on-boards every navigator using the GW Oncology Patient Navigation Training: The Fundamentals

- The World Health Organization released Patient navigation for early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer: Technical brief which features GW resources and science on patient navigation

Abrale, the Brazilian Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, translated the GW Oncology Patient Navigation: The Fundamentals training into Portuguese, and through a partnership with their government, made it freely available to all public sector healthcare professionals. Dr. Mandi Pratt-Chapman was a Visiting Professor at the Universidade de Sao Paulo where she provided several guest lectures, a keynote lecture on patient navigation and a navigation workshop at All Together Against Cancer annual conference where Abrale launched the Portuguese version of the training
- The El Salvadorean nonprofit ASAPRECAN requested permission to adapt the GW Oncology Patient Navigation Training for patient navigators
- Dr. Pratt-Chapman recorded a patient navigation short course for the Union for International Cancer Control

- Dr. Pratt-Chapman provided lectures on patient navigation reimbursement on a CDC webinar for all states, at the annual in-person meeting of the South Carolina Cancer Alliance, and at the virtual Susan G. Komen patient navigation annual summit

| February is National Cancer Prevention Month |
|
|
National Cancer Prevention Month will provide an opportunity for the wider cancer control community and institutions to promote early cancer screenings and modifiable health behaviors to reduce the risk of cancer. Patients often need assistance managing the financial aspects of cancer. The GW Cancer Center's Financial Navigation course is designed to assist patient navigators by outlining the impact of financial toxicity on patient wellness, identifying resources to meet patient financial challenges, and providing sample evaluation tools to show the value of financial navigation in practice.
