Hours update: UBC Botanical Garden and Nitobe Memorial Garden are now open from Wednesday-Sunday from 10 am – 2 pm. UBC Botanical Garden admission is $5 per person (purchased online or on-site) and Nitobe Memorial Garden is by donation until April 1. On April 1, hours will be extended to 4:30 pm at both gardens, the Greenheart TreeWalk will re-open and admission rates will go back to our usual seasonal rates. March in the Garden

Following on from a year of weather-related surprises, I am continuing with the theme of cautious weather forecasting. I will refrain from predicting the normal March flowering regime, which would include (at a minimum) magnolias, primulas, rhododendrons and a wide variety of bulbs. Instead, I am falling back on another group of broadleaved evergreens. Better safe than sorry—and anyway, I seldom have occasion to highlight plants that don’t have showy flowers.

Bird's-eye View: Reducing Bird Strikes

A study conducted by four UBC alumni led by Krista De Groot, a biologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, showed that 152 birds died over 225 days due to bird strikes at eight randomly chosen buildings on UBC Vancouver’s campus. Despite the numbers, bird strikes are an ecological issue not many people are aware of. At UBC, researchers and staff are working to change that, with a grassroots effort to bird-proof buildings.
