Congratulations to the National Institute for Medical Respite Care, which celebrates its third anniversary this month! NIMRC was launched in 2020 as a special initiative of NHCHC. In just three years, NIMRC has regranted $6.5 million to 54 unique medical respite programs in the United States.
“As we are succeeding in elevating medical respite as part of the solution to homelessness, more states and localities are considering formally incorporating medical respite in their Medicaid programs and turning to the Council for help,” says Bobby Watts, CEO of NHCHC and Director of NIMRC. “The standards we’ve published to promote high-quality and patient-centered care have been extremely well-received and are being implemented in many programs. We expect to take more concrete steps to refine them and have more programs use them as a guide for improving their services.”

| Community Conversation: Self-Care: A Lived Experience Perspective
| |
People with lived experience of homelessness who also advocate for human rights and justice do work that is vital while dealing with demands that can be all-consuming and overwhelming. Self-care is important for wellness and to avoid burnout.
The Ellen Dailey Advocacy Committee is hosting a Community Conversation July 27 at 4 p.m. CDT that will make space to talk about self-care from the consumer perspective. We'll be joined by Myra Nagy, Paul Tunison, and Dontae Latrigue — three accomplished advocates with years of experience balancing the demands of advocacy work with caring for their well-being. This will be an interactive “help for the helpers” event, so please bring your questions and be prepared to share lessons from your own work.
