March Newsletter

As we move into the month of March, the Office of Student Veterans hopes you are enjoying classes and the sunshine!
We hope to bring you luck with two OSV-sponsored events for the month of March! We will be conducting a March Madness Bracket available for all our military-affiliated members! (No experience required.) We will also be doing another Happy Hour at the Krafthouse and we hope to see you there.

March Madness Bracket

The Duke Office of Student Veterans will be sponsoring a March Madness competition for our veterans. We are awarding prizes of Duke Gear to the top three Duke students with the highest scores. Sign up or login onto CBS Sports to join our pool by March 16th by noon.
Selection Sunday will take place on March 12th, and the bracket will be released that evening. We encourage you to create your bracket by March 14th to be in time for the First Four games. The last day to submit brackets or make changes is March 16th by noon.
As a virtual event, ALL military-affiliated students (in-person and remote) are welcome to join, and staff as well! No experience required.

Happy Hour at the Krafthouse

The Office of Student Veterans will be holding another Happy Hour at the Krafthouse located within the Brodhead Center on West Campus Wednesday, March 22nd from 1600-1800.
This is a great opportunity to meet and build rapport with others in our community. Appetizers will be provided by the Office of Student Veterans. Drinks are available for purchase.

STEM Student? You May Be Eligible for Extended Benefits!

The Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship is a scholarship for Veterans using the Post-9/11 GI Bill and Fry Scholars which allows them to extend their benefits by up to 9 months or $30,000. 
In order to qualify, students must: 
  1. Be enrolled in a qualifying STEM program.
  2. Have completed 60 standard credit hours (or 90 quarter credit hours) towards their degree.
  3. Have 6 months or less of their benefits left (if you apply too soon, you'll be denied). 

Share your Student/Alumni Bio!

Interested in having a student veteran bio featured in the newsletter or a veteran alumni bio active on our Student Affairs website? Email our graduate assistant, Beautiful Reed, at beautiful.reed@duke.edu. She will provide you with a bio template and instructions on how to edit, update, or remove your student or alumni bio at any time.

Open Door Availability

The Office of Student Veterans will be available throughout the school year. Although we will not have official office hours, we are readily able to assist you at any time most convenient for you. 
If you would like to meet, please email our graduate assistants Nic at nicholas.harrelson@duke.edu, and Beautiful at beautiful.reed@duke.edu. They will be happy to schedule you to meet with someone in our office.
