Give!Local has started! Literacy Together is honored to be among 52 amazing local nonprofits this year. We are proud to be partnering with Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe again. When you donate at a certain level, you will receive a Malaprop's e-coupon! Win-win!
We’re working on two new exciting youth initiatives:
1. Recent reports indicate Buncombe County has over 750 homeless students, and the numbers continue to rise (read the information here). Literacy Together will work with homeless 9th-12th graders who need a reading and writing tutor. Your 1:1 tutoring support can help students stay in school, graduate, and build a stable and healthy future for themselves.
2. Literacy Together will serve 5th-8th graders who need a reading/writing or math tutor. Tutoring will take place on-site at one or more schools in the Enka/Candler area.
You can learn more about these projects here. Please contact Rebecca at Rebecca@lit-together.org if you are interested in these volunteer opportunities. Thank you!
Thank you!
Have a wonderful holiday season! The Literacy Together community appreciates you. Watch this video!
Watch Sergio's success story
Sergio is a local photographer and an ESOL student from Michoacan, Mexico. He came to the US 20 years ago and started taking classes with us in 2018. Sergio considers his one-on-one classes crucial to his success in learning English. Fluency in his adopted country's language has also improved his business since he can now work with English speakers in addition to the Latino community. Watch this video where he tells his story, and check out his beautiful photography here.
Did you know some companies offer employee matching programs?
Most companies will match an employee's gift to a charity one-to-one, but others match gifts two-to-one, and some even match donations three-to-one! This means that your gift to a charity can be worth two to four times as much as you donate.
Some companies give based on volunteer hours. We recently received $1,000 from a tutor's employer, honoring her volunteerism.
Our students could benefit immensely from holding calendars to organize their time. Please get in touch with Laura at Laura@lit-together.org if you want to donate one. Thanks!
We loved this sweet note from Grandma Troy!
Fantastic program. I would have loved to have had this for my daughter as a struggling single mom. Books were big in our house. Thankfully, my granddaughter is enjoying this program now!
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library puts books into the hands and hearts of children worldwide. We're mailing a free book monthly to over 5,300 registered children in Buncombe County.
158 people have attended our online volunteer orientation meeting in 2023 so far. We've modified the format of our online orientation meeting to be more inclusive. Everyone is welcome to join us, from prospective volunteer tutors to community members to local business owners and nonprofits wanting to learn more about Literacy Together's work. This is what one participant said after the orientation meeting:
I got clarity on the programs and the needs. It's sad that this country has so many unmet needs but I hope to be part of the solution.
