COVID Relief Update

Last week, Senate Republicans released their vision for the next COVID relief package, the Health, Economic Assistance, Liability Protection and Schools (HEALS) Act.
In May, the House passed a $3.1 trillion bill, dubbed the HEROES Act. The HEALS Act, totaling $1 trillion, would provide:
  • $29 billion for higher education;
  • $15.5 billion in additional funding for the National Institute of Health, ($10 billion set aside for research relief); and
  • grant liability protections to college and universities.
While the Senate package marks at least the beginning of the next round of relief funding negotiations, the two sides, plus the White House, remain far apart. As progress is made on the next relief package, we will continue to track what it may mean for higher education, and Texas A&M specifically.
