Message from the Executive Director
Dear friend of SMRI,
It is hard to believe that the new academic year is less than two weeks old. Our first large public event is only just around the corner. Next Tuesday is the International Day of Mathematics — as pi truncated to two decimal places is 3.14. We are celebrating the day with a
public lecture given by Oded Yacobi on “Duels and Duality” based on the life and mathematics of Évariste Galois. We will also hold
two workshops for high school students in the same week. You can find more information on these and other events next week via the links or below. It is still possible to register!
When the University reopened on 9 January after the summer break, a number of visitors promptly arrived, and four have now already completed their research stays in Australia. Twelve others are currently filling the offices and open working spaces at the Institute, in addition to our postdocs and staff. It is exciting to discover new mathematics on the boards in the common room every day I come in!
Asilata Bapat, Andrew Mathas, Daniel Tubbenhauer and Oded Yacobi organised the workshop and conference “Categorification in Representation Theory” in February. A number of our visitors were involved in this event, and you can catch up on lectures and talks given at the 2-week event via the
conference webpage. As a special surprise, the conference participants were treated to free live music by Australian bands featuring on triple j’s hottest 100 countdown — courtesy of the university’s welcome program to new and returning students…
We have just closed our first application round for visits in 2024, and the Scientific Advisory Committee is now busy assessing the many excellent applications. If you missed this round, look out in the middle of the year to apply for a visit taking place between July 2024 and June 2025. Our
Domestic and
Ukrainian Visitor Programs remain open on a rolling basis.
