Dear Galvin Scholars Alumni,
Welcome to the inaugural Galvin Scholars Alumni Newsletter! I promise that we are not asking you for money but instead hope that this letter serves as a place for you to catch up with your classmates, share your successes with us, and see what the current Galvin Scholars are doing on campus.
Here on campus, the Galvin team and I are working to continually improve the program to be a source of support and guidance for our students. We value your feedback and reflections to know what was helpful to you as a student here and what resources you wish had been available to you.
As we begin a new calendar year, it is a great time to reflect on just how far you have come. The Galvin program is delighted to have been a small part of your academic journey. It is my hope that you have been able to take the lessons you have learned in your time at Notre Dame and apply them in your daily life to make the world a better place. The journey you are on still may be quite bumpy and curvy, but that is to be expected as you are still figuring out your next steps and who you want to be.

Hi everyone,
My name is Mateo Tristan, and I am an alum from the class of 2025. I studied Chemical Engineering with a minor in Bioengineering at ND. I currently work at Merck in the Manufacturing Leadership Development Program in Philadelphia, PA. My first rotation is in Lab Quality Operations.
In my free time, I enjoy traveling and trying new hobbies, such as golfing, cooking, and running.
Looking back on my time at ND, a couple of pieces of advice I would share include:
Don’t feel like you have to have everything figured out during your four years. I remember trying to map out my future exactly and ended up changing my plans up until senior year. You can never predict when a new opportunity will arise.
Look for the transferable skills you want to carry forward after school. Whether it’s from a class, project, research lab, or internship, identifying and clearly articulating how you can leverage those skills in new situations will help you succeed as you encounter new experiences in industry, medicine, or graduate school.
I will always cherish the memories and time spent at ND! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

After graduating from ND in '24, I was commissioned as a Naval Officer through ND Naval ROTC and am now in flight school training to become a Naval Aviator. I just completed the Primary flight training stage in Corpus Christi, Texas, and was just selected to move to Kingsville, Texas, for Advanced Jet Training. Attached is a picture of me after I completed my solo flight in the T-6B Texan aircraft.
I wish the best of luck for students graduating this spring -- cherish these last few months and know that you'll always have a Home Under the Dome at Notre Dame. Your education and experiences at ND will prepare you well for whatever life has in store for you. Be adventurous and always remember to thank the people who helped you along your path! Go Irish!

Galvin Scholars: Staying Connected |

The Galvin Scholars program was established in 2018 and currently has about 222 alumni. It is our hope that the Galvin Scholars network can be a powerful resource for current and past students.
Please visit our website to explore the dedicated alumni page, where you'll find a link to a short survey. We are not asking for money, but your input will help us to continue to improve the program and potentially make connections for current Galvin students. You can also stay engaged with us by becoming a connection on LinkedIn.
Fall of 2025, the Galvin Scholars held an Alumni Panel to connect with current students and share advice. We are hoping to continue this event in years to come.

Emmanuel "Manny" Uzobuife |
|
|
Manny Uzobuife is a senior Galvin Scholar from the Bronx, NY, majoring in Science-Business with a triple minor in Science and Patient Advocacy, Chemistry, and Musical Theatre.
Last month, he won the Marshall Scholarship, becoming only the 12th in Notre Dame's history to do so. For those of you who do not know, this scholarship is a prestigious award for studying in the UK after college. For context, Americans who have won this award have gone on to have outstanding careers, including as professors, lawyers, judges, physicians, scientists, businesspeople, and politicians. For example, last year's Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry, John Jumper, was a Marshall Scholar, as were former Supreme Court Justices Stephen Breyer and Neil Gorsuch. It is comparable to the Rhodes Scholarship, which many notable Americans have also won, including Pete Buttigieg, Cory Booker, Bill Clinton, and many, many more.
Manny states, "Being a Marshall Scholar is definitely my crowning achievement since getting into Notre Dame. I can not understate how much I credit my success to Galvin. Many of my best friends at ND who have supported me in many ways came from the bonds forged in Bond G09. Galvin also helped supplement what I consider to be a lackluster STEM background compared to some other students at ND."
Manny has encouraged all Galvin Scholars to take advantage of all opportunities at ND. He has especially recommended the Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement (CUSE), where helpful people helped him to apply for the Marshall Scholarships. He encourages students to attend lectures, seminars, and extracurricular activities.
We are so proud of Manny and his success here at Notre Dame and with the Galvin Scholar program.

Each year, we work to engage the Galvin Scholars in new ways. We have an active Student Leadership Committee that helps us to put on extraordinary events. Please take a look at some of our highlights from this last year.

|
In celebration of the new semester and to showcase the work of our excellent Scholars, we held the 6th annual fall poster session. Here, Galvin Scholars showcase their summer research and internships. Faculty and other Galvin Scholars attend, ask great questions, and learn more about how to find summer opportunities.

|
Great events are organized by our SLC including study breaks with activities and snacks, Mentor-Mentee Meeting, Alumni Panel, and of course, the end of the year formal, affectionately referred to as Gormal.
|
|
|
In celebration of the closing of the academic year, our program coordinators had to be creative and move our celebration indoors due to weather. The rain did not ruin the fun, however, games and delicious ice cream from Chiefs were still enjoyed by all.
|
|
In spring 2025, the Galvin Scholars graduated 67 students. We were able to celebrate the incredible journey of our scholars with their families at The Embassy Suite with a delicious brunch. Professor Young spoke at the event and handed out stoles and senior gifts.

The program is directed by Dr. Kelley Young with a lot of support and guidance from our two amazing program coordinators, Jen Kuzdas and Erin Scott. The faculty who teach our courses are constantly changing, but we are fortunate to have such dedicated faculty to work with. Please make sure to check out our website and see our Galvin Scholars Faculty who keep our program small, interactive, and a safe space to bond and learn with other Scholars. Also, your faculty would always like to hear from you. Don’t be afraid to send them a quick note to let them know what you are up to and how you are doing.
