To all our readers, welcome to the new look BREAST newsletter, where we will update you with the latest news, test sets and workshops.

With restrictions easing, it is especially wonderful to see breast screening services back in operation for those states which had a period of hibernation. Additionally, we are excited to finally plan our next face-to-face workshops.

Upgrading the BREAST platform

We are in the process of upgrading our platform for a better and more user-friendly experience. Once this upgrade is complete, rather than having to download the education test sets through a PACS system, you will just need access to high resolution monitors.

Newsletter Feature Story: Dr Jennie Noakes

Part of the BreastScreen family for many years, here's a little video on Jennie, hosted by our Director Prof Sarah Lewis. Jennie shares with us her professional journey in breast imaging and her current role with BreastScreen NSW.

BREAST Workshop coming in Feb 2022!

With 2021 almost over and lockdown restrictions easing, we can finally organise a face to face workshop for our BREAST readers. Please save the date: February 11-13th 2022. It will be held at the University of Sydney. More information will be provided in due course.

BREAST at RANZCR 2021

Whilst we couldn't run our BREAST workshop at this year's RANZCR meeting, our Director Prof Sarah Lewis, gave a wonderful talk. We have provided a similar recording of a research presentation for all of our readers of which you are welcome to view here.

New BREAST test sets to be released!

Our wonderful team member and senior researcher, Dr Yun Trieu, has worked tirelessly these past few months, with the help of some of our esteemed BreastScreen colleagues, to develop 3 new test sets for our readers;

Our newest DBT test set is ready now! Named DBT Sydney, this follows on from our inaugural DBT Perth test set.
The newly created Junior test set is aimed at all trainees and will be available in early 2022.
Lastly, we welcome the ACT test set to our reservior. This is currently in review and we hope to have it available for early 2022, in time for our workshop in February!

Feature Article in Nature Scientific Reports

A recent publication by the BREAST team and colleagues highlights how BREAST test sets improve radiologist's ability in identifying particular abnormal lesions on mammograms through training test sets that include immediate feedback. Click here to read the article.

VIETRAD project update

VIETRAD is a Aus4Innovation governemnt funded project with Vietnam, which began in 2020.

This project provides an innovative solution to improve diagnostic performance levels of Vietnamese clinicians which is expected to lead to an increase in treatment efficacy, patient prognosis anda decrease in the mortality rate of breast cancer in Vietnam. For the first time in Vietnam, we have established the online training systems for testing,monitoring and improving radiologic diagnosis of breast cancer from current lowlevels of sensitivity and specificity to values that at least equal those in Westernised countries such as Australia. VIETRAD is a highly successful and novel pilot and set a milestone to the future mode of delivering onlinetraining and education despite physical and pandemic constraints.

To date, the VIETRAD training platforms are now implemented in 25 hospitals in the north, the south and the central regions of Vietnam, including large hospitals.

Fudan project update

BREAST collaboration project with Fudan University, China began in 2019 to invesigate the diagnostic effacacy of radiologists in Shanghai.

To date, we have 60 radiologists and trainees who have participated in this project, all having varying degrees of experience in reading mammograms.This data will give some insight into understanding the diagnostic effacacy of radiologists detecting breast cancer in Shanghai and explore the feasibility of the BREAST platform as an educational tool to enhance Chinese readers' capability of cancer diagnosis.
