Conversations Across the Counter Reach Hearts and Bring Comfort
Lisa was nominated for a quarterly award after her manager witnessed a moment of empathy and connection between Lisa and a young customer.
The manager stopped by during the weeks in September when smoke and wildfires were devastating the area.
"I saw a disheveled-looking mom and her young son at the counter and when the child struck up a conversation with Lisa, he revealed he had lost his home in the fires," her manager said. "Lisa comforted him, asked if his family was okay, told him how important it was to be alive and safe, and reassured his mom."
The boy, clearly more calm and relaxed, thanked Lisa for listening. Lisa told him that if he was feeling scared, talking about it with someone will always make him feel better.
"I hope in the darkest of times, he can look back at the comfort Lisa provided them," her manager continued. "She is a stellar example of the kind of people that make PDX such a special place through which to travel."

Construction Begins on North and South Throats
Construction is beginning on the north and south throats (the passageways that connect the ticket lobby with Clocktower Plaza). The throats will move about 100 feet further to the north and south as we make room for the new terminal footprint. Don't worry – the old throats won't close until the new ones open in April 2021, so you'll always have a clear path to Clocktower Plaza and the security checkpoints. Catch up on what else is new with PDX Next.

PDX Musicians Pause, USO Closes During Freeze
To fight the rapid spread of COVID-19, Oregon Governor Kate Brown issued a travel advisory last week that cautions against non-essential out-of-state travel, asks people to self-quarantine for 14 days after arriving from another state or country, and encourages residents to stay local. For additional details, check the Oregon Health Authority COVID page and the PDX Employee COVID website. The CDC is also urging Americans not to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday. Read the CDC holiday advisory.
Additionally, Oregon is now in a statewide two-week freeze, with a four-week freeze for Multnomah County. At PDX, the volunteer musician program has paused and the USO, which provides resources to traveling military members, is closed during this period. Read the full list of risk reduction measures

Healing Family Through Music and Art

You might remember Port of Portland senior digital communications designer Steve Cowden from his work on the Travel Safe characters, but his most recent project is a bit more personal.
When his family experienced an unexpected loss, Steve teamed up with his brother and his son to create a song – “Chocolate Cake and Ice Cream" – about the endurance of love, friendship and family. The tune is now the backdrop for his animated short film about a dog and an alley cat who strike up an unlikely friendship from afar. You'll have to watch to see what happens, but as the lyrics say, “Some things are better, when they’re together. So let’s never say goodbye.”
