Dear fellow Miamians,

Keeping our students, faculty and staff safe and healthy is our top priority during these challenging times and always. I thought you might enjoy reading about some of the amazing things your colleagues are doing to help Miami adapt during the coronavirus outbreak. Thank you for all that you do each and every day.

ROTC AT MIAMI
Keeping Miami's ROTC unit on track for success
During the few weeks preceding the nationwide outbreak of COVID-19, Capt. Ben Durdle of Miami’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 640 anticipated the move to remote learning and planned for telework. Capt. Durdle ensured the full population of AES classroom courses on Canvas and found a way to fulfill 94% of training objectives for 59 cadets, setting Miami's detachment on course to commission 10 Miamians as second lieutenants in the U.S. Air Force this spring. Staff Sergeant Vincent Avila, an administrative specialist, created processes enabling 15 cadets to remain on track to attend field training this summer.

A new tool for online grading
D.J. Rao, associate professor of computer science and software engineering, stepped up with a creative idea to assist fellow faculty members. He created a tool, integrated into Canvas, that allows faculty members to grade a student's submitted program automatically. As the crisis hit, he made the tool available to other faculty and created videos on how to use the tool on their Canvas courses. Thanks to Dr. Rao for his willingness to help his fellow faculty members as we transitioned to remote learning.

Research on the 'new normal'
Dennis Cheatham, communication design faculty, is teaching in the MFA studio for experience design. This online program explores where human-centered design meets digital technology.  Students in the Experience Design xdMFA are researching and co-designing for the "new normal" during COVID-19, asking, "How can we design products, services and systems to facilitate relatedness, belonging and wellness for people impacted by the pandemic?" ICA COACHES
Staying in touch with student-athletes
Swimming & Diving Coach Hollie Bonewit-Cron has devised several new ways to stay engaged with her team. She has started a newsletter. She writes handwritten cards to parents of her seniors, expressing her heartfelt connection for these four years and thanking them for their support. "They are not here on campus for me to tell them personally, and I feel most parents might appreciate a tangible reminder of the impact their child had in our program," Coach Bonewit-Cron said. Finally, she is recording and posting videos that occasionally include her own children so the student-athletes can remain connected.
