As the year 2024 comes to a close, I want to thank you for being members of the MFIT family. We hope that you enjoyed visiting our free exhibitions and attending our public programs. Colleen Hill curated Statement Sleeves in the Fashion History Gallery, and in Gallery FIT we helped the graduate students organize Untying the Bow. After we finished renovating the big Special Exhibitions Gallery downstairs, it has been the site for Africa’s Fashion Diaspora, curated by Elizabeth Way. The exhibition has garnered attention from The New York Times and The New Yorker. In 2025, we plan to renovate the ground floor Museum galleries so be sure to visit our website before planning a visit.
On behalf of everyone at the Museum, we are thankful for your enthusiasm and generosity. Joining the Couture Council is one of the best ways to support the Museum. Every year we honor a designer at our annual benefit luncheon, and in 2024, Simon Porte Jacquemus received the Couture Council Award, as well as an enthusiastic student welcome on campus. I can promise that the 2025 awardee will also be very special…
With best wishes for a happy and safe holiday season,
Dr. Valerie Steele, Director and Chief Curator, The Museum at FIT

CURRENT | AFRICA'S FASHION DIASPORA
September 18 – December 29, 2024
Africa's Fashion Diaspora examines fashion as a medium of storytelling and as a vital way for designers to contribute to longstanding and evolving ideas of transnational Black cultural spaces. Whether described as Négritude, Pan-Africanism, the Black Atlantic, Black consciousness, or Afrofuturism, Black thinkers and creatives, from philosophers to writers, musicians, and visual artists, have theorized cultural connections between diverse communities of African descent. UPCOMING | FASHIONING WONDER: A CABINET OF CURIOSITIES
February 19 – April 20, 2025
This inventive exhibition provides the first in-depth exploration of the fascinating connections between cabinets of curiosities and fashion. Also known as wunderkammern in German, cabinets of curiosities can be traced back to the early 16th century and were precursors to the modern museum. The nearly 200 garments and accessories, almost exclusively selected from MFIT's permanent collection, are inspired by the breadth of objects collected within the cabinets. Learn more.

UPCOMING | ALL THAT GLITTERS...
February 26 – March 23, 2025
All That Glitters... explores surfaces that shine, focusing on themes of material production, social and financial values, and conservation. This exhibition, conceived of and organized by graduate students in FIT's MA Fashion and Textile Studies program, examines not only the bright side of these materials, but also their darker side–including their environmental impact and their use in protests, such as "glitter bombing."
