Dear Cathedral Family,
So it is May, which means flowers, Mother’s Day, May Crownings, graduations, and First Communions. May is a great month, full of celebrations and goodness. And here in Indy, it’s Race Month as well!
Not to be outdone, we had quite an April celebration on the Hill last Thursday. We held our Senior Awards and Senior Mass and introduced a new Holy Cross priest to our community. Fr. Geoffrey Mooney will come to us for the 2023-24 school year beginning this summer, and he joined us to celebrate our very special Mass. We had heard that Fr. Mooney is well-loved in South Bend and a terrific homilist. We, all 1,134 Cathedral students, and our 150 educators (and parents) saw and heard Fr. Mooney; his delivery and message were excellent. He told us that God is always drawing us to Him, all of us, all the time. He even used a visual of someone pulling on a tug-of-war rope to help us visualize God’s constant pull. He delivered this message with a booming, strong voice, and our students were locked into his message.
We can all recall excellent homilies that we have experienced in our lives; they can leave a lasting impact on us. After what I saw and experienced with Fr. Mooney, I believe that our school community will be able to experience many more beautiful homilies from Fr. Mooney in the years to come. We are humbled and honored to have him join Fr. Jomy and our Holy Cross team, along with Holy Cross Brother Matthew Rehagen, who also comes to us this summer with the highest regards from South Bend and the University of Notre Dame.
On that same day last week, we celebrated our annual All Out Irish Day of Giving. Our Advancement Team energized our donors, as well as our students and educators. We even had a handful of educators who allowed their students to toss a pie in their faces for the cause! Combined with the Senior Mass, the energy level was very high all day, and the pride and support of our school were very evident. When all was said and done, we raised over $118,000, with more than 351 donors participating as of last Friday morning. Greatness called, and of course, Cathedral supporters answered with tremendous zeal!
Our seniors will graduate on May 21, and our school year will end the following week. As you know, Cathedral does not rest, but we will take a week or two off this summer to allow our educators to enjoy well-earned rest and relaxation. Of course, Camp Cathedral, with record enrollment, as well as our summer school program, will carry us through the summer. But first, let us stop and smell the flowers and enjoy perhaps the best month of the year, May. May I suggest you take time to say extra prayers to Our Lady and Patroness this month? You know we will do that ourselves here at our beloved school. Please pray for our seniors as they begin the next chapter in their lives with their hearts and minds properly prepped for the journey.
With the Hope of Holy Cross and the Joy of the Risen Jesus,
Rob Bridges, PhD
President
