Warriors Crushing Hunger
Indiana Tech, along with five other area schools, is taking part in Community Harvest Food Bank’s UCanCrushHunger 2018 to feed hungry people in northeast Indiana. Right now, there are 84,100 food-insecure people in northeast Indiana. Indiana Tech, along with Huntington University, Ivy Tech, Manchester University, Purdue Fort Wayne and the University of Saint Francis, are seeking to raise 50,000 pounds through Nov. 5.
Safety and Security
For the Department of Safety and Security, there is no higher priority than the safety of Indiana Tech’s campus community. Our department is comprised of contracted security officers and led by director Devin Blackford, who is an employee of Indiana Tech.
Safety and Security currently provides patrols every day of the year, 24 hours a day. We maintain “eyes on” any developing concerns, conduct vehicle patrols with well-marked vehicles and place stationary officers at locations around campus. We can respond to suspicious persons, maintain access control of buildings, provide first aid and CPR/AED for medical emergencies, report potential safety hazards, provide a 24-hour link to police and fire services, if needed, and much more. Safety and Security monitors cameras in nearly every common space, entrance and hallway of our campus buildings. Officers within the department are quick to react to alarms and incidents as they occur. We conduct drills and training across multiple areas, including active shooter and fire evacuation. The university offers emergency telephones across campus that can immediately reach a security officer when needed. During orientation, we provide tips to students about how they can take personal accountability, be more aware of their surroundings and build a safer approach to their daily routine. Safety and Security also provides escorts to anywhere on campus for any community member who would like the added comfort of walking with someone. Our officers can be reached anytime through our dispatch and our patrol officer cell phone. Those numbers can be found posted at every entrance and are provided in the student handbook.
Now that your student has been on campus for a while, it’s a good time to check in about personal safety. Do they know what resources are available for getting around campus safely or who to call in an emergency? Do they use the buddy system at night? Knowing the resources available to them and practicing safety precautions will lead to them feeling empowered, not scared. Questions or requests for specific program information can be sent to Devin Blackford at dkblackford@indianatech.edu.
