Get Back to Basics During Preparedness Month
September is Preparedness Month and it’s time to get back to the essentials. That means taking small, smart steps to make your home, workplace, and community more resilient – think emergency kits, family plans, and knowing your evacuation routes.
Here are four steps you can take today:
- Start at home – Pick an out-of-area contact, choose a neighborhood rally spot, and build a supply list that won’t break the bank.
- Include the whole family – Check out resources for the young ones in your home.
- Build kits – Make a kit for your home, car, and office, then add batteries, medications, snacks, and flashlights.
- Know your routes – Walk your home and workplace evacuation paths with coworkers or pets, then make a map, label it, and keep it in your kit.

Sanford Biggers’ Exhibit Opens in PDX Mezzanine Gallery
Head to the PDX art gallery on the north mezzanine level for our latest exhibition, celebrating the quilt-based works of artist Sanford Biggers. Biggers’ large-scale sculptures are suspended from the ceiling in the Concourse Connector and embody the rich heritage of the Pacific Northwest. As Biggers shared, "The unique opportunity of this project and its architecture inspired me to consider how I can create an artwork that responds directly to the context of a space that embodies transition, energy, interaction, movement and potential." If you haven’t visited before, the peaceful gallery is the perfect spot to unwind, get inspired, and explore the stories behind the art when you need a break from a busy airport.

Honoring September 11 at PDX
Last Thursday marked 24 years since September 11, 2001. We’re thinking of the lives lost and the many people whose stories were forever changed. That day reshaped how airports welcome travelers and care for their safety. At PDX, we carry those lessons with care, and we’re grateful for the PDX People who help make this place feel safe, kind, and human every day.

PDX in Pictures
In case you missed it, Portland Airport Fire and Rescue recently challenged the Port of Portland Police to a little fitness competition to see which team could walk, jog, or run the most miles. The bright and shiny prize? Their duty vehicles freshly washed by the runners-up.
Well, the results are in, and the winners are...the police officers! Congrats to the challenge champions and great job to all the competitors who covered some serious ground. Together, they generated a little humor, a lot of camaraderie, and an impressive 1,639 miles!
