Sea Lion Activity at South Beach Harbor
Sea Lion activity has increased this season throughout the Harbor. While these animals are a protected and important part of our marine environment, their presence on docks and vessels can create safety and access concerns.
The Harbor is currently using deterrents such as buckets, seal stops, and air dancers, with more tools coming soon. Still, keeping our docks and vessels safe is a shared responsibility that requires active involvement from all berth holders. If you would like a deterrent bucket or seal stop on your vessel, please contact the office. A refundable deposit may be required, and owners are responsible for upkeep.
To help keep Sea Lions off the docks, we recommend the following strategies:
1. Noise Making: Use loud noises to scare them away, such as air horns, whistles, or clapping. Please be mindful of noise levels and neighbors.
2. Movement: Sea lions are wary of bold movement. Waving arms, using flags, or placing other moving objects can help deter them.
3. Visual Deterrents: Fenders, safety fencing, or a decoy can create visual disturbances that discourage sea lions (Photos of creative ideas below).
We are also working with neighboring marinas and the Marine Mammal Center to organize a Sea Lion Forum. This event will provide an opportunity to discuss sea lion behavior, management strategies, and best practices.
More details will be shared soon, and we hope you will join us.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping keep South Beach Harbor safe and accessible.
