Featured Jessica Wallace, YSU assistant professor of Kinesiology and Sport Science and director of the Master of Athletic Training Program, traveled to Africa recently to help develop concussion assessment, evaluation and treatment for Zambian premiere league soccer athletes. Wallace and MAT student Kelsey Wallace are pictured with the Nkwazi Football Club following a team training session and baseline concussion testing. The research team visited seven Lusaka-based premiere league teams. The project in partnership University of Zambia Teaching Hospital and the Football Association of Zambia aims to develop concussion test measures for Zambian athletes and to develop a concussion protocol. Wallace first traveled to Zambia in 2016 to provide concussion training sponsored by the International Olympic Committee and National Olympic Committee of Zambia.

Timothy Francisco, professor of English and director of the YSU Center for Working Class Studies, co-edited Shakespeare and the 99%: Literary Studies, the Profession and the Production of Inequity. The essays examine the study of Shakespeare and literature more generally in today’s climate of educational and professional uncertainty. “The smartest, most original, and most useful book on Shakespeare and the politics of higher education I have seen in many years,” Henry Turner of Rutgers University, said about the book.

Brett Conner, associate professor of Manufacturing Engineering and director of the YSU Advanced Manufacturing Research Center, was an editor of the Technological Innovations in Metals Engineering special edition of JOM, the journal of the Minerals, Metals, & Materials Society. Papers from the special edition originated from the TIME 2018 conference organized by Technion Israel Institute of Technology, YSU and TMS in May 2018 in Israel. TIME 2020 will be in Youngstown, June 2 to 4, 2020.

Amy Crawford, professor of Telecommunication Studies, is the author of "Witness? Perceptions of LeBron James' Civic Responsibility," a chapter in the new book Case Studies in Sport Communication: You Make the Call. The article examines the #NoJusticeNoLebron campaign on Twitter following the 2014 shooting of Tamir Rice by Cleveland police.

Xiangjia Min, professor of Biological Sciences, recently published two chapters in the book Genetics and Genomics of Pineapple. The chapter titles are “Genome-Wide Identification and Analysis of Protease-Coding Genes in Pineapple” and “Analysis of Transcriptome and Alternative Splicing Landscape in Pineapple."

Anwarul Islam, professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been named a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, a designation held by only 3 percent of the more than 150,000 ASCE members worldwide. Islam joined the YSU faculty in 2005. He organized the Mahoning Valley Miniature Bridge Building Competition among high school students from 2008 to 2015. His research has focused on monitoring bridges by analyzing dynamic response collected through wireless sensor networks, supported in part by a grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation. He is faculty advisor of the YSU ASCE Student Chapter, whose accomplishments include championships in Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge competitions.

Beta Gamma Sigma International has selected Bill Vendemia, professor of Management, as Chapter Advisor of the Year. Vendemia has served as YSU chapter advisor for 10 years and was selected for his leadership, mentoring and guidance. BGS is the world’s premier business honorary for schools accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. This year, the YSU chapter was recognized for Highest Honors on the organization’s Honor Roll.

RJ Thompson, assistant professor of Graphic & Interactive Design, was selected from of pool of 65 applicants to receive the Ohio Governor’s Award in the Arts for Community Development for the “City of You” project, a marketing and advertising platform for the city of Youngstown. The campaign received the Ohio Economic Development Association's Best of Marketing Award in 2017.

Sara Michaliszyn, associate professor and chair of Kinesiology and Sport Science, is co-author of “Longitudinal Patterns of Physical Activity Using a Personalized Intervention for Adolescents with Diabetes or Obesity” in Diabetes Educator. Michaliszyn also co-authored “Internships in Kinesiology: Reconsidering Best Practices” in Kinesiology Review.

Charles Vergon, professor of Educational Leadership, delivered a paper at the Educational Law Annual Convention on “Liability for Mass School Shootings: Lessons from Columbine, Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook.” The paper was the focus of a special report in Education Week on the shootings in Parkland, Fla., for which Vergon was also interviewed.

Mari Alschuler, associate professor of Social Work, presented "Suicide Prevention for LGBTQ Service Members and Veterans" at the 2018 Military Social Work Conference at the University of Texas at Austin’s Steve Hicks School of Social Work and at the Council for Social Work Education's Annual Program Meeting in Orlando, Fla. She also presented "Mindfulness Meditation Training for Master's Social Work Field Students" at the 12th International Conference on Practice Teaching and Field Education in Health and Social Work at St. John's College at Oxford University in the United Kingdom.

Paul Sracic, professor/chair of Politics and International Relations, was the analyst for NHK World Japan during President Trump’s State of the Union Address. In addition, he talked about the midterm elections during a speaking tour in Italy, sponsored by the State Department, that included stops at Bocconi University (Milan), University of Milan, University of Florence, Sapienza University of Rome, 24 ORE Business School in Rome and Catania University in Catania (Sicily). He also recently published “The real shock of Andrew McCabe’s ’60 Minutes' interview” on CNN.com.

Sharon Schroeder, associate director of College Access, presented "College Credit Plus 101: A crash course in state policy and law" at the Ohio Alliance of Dual Enrollment Partnerships annual state conference. The presentation reviews what new CCP coordinators (both K-12 and higher education) need to know to manage the College Credit Plus program for their organizations. OADEP is the only
organization in the state that focuses solely on dual enrollment programming.
