| The Senior Golfers returned to the "Queen of Southern Hospitality," the Grand Hotel, in April of 2023. The event opened with drinks and dinner at local favorite The Wash House restaurant, so named because the restored building originally was a laundry for local families, with the old wash basin, circa 1870's, still located in the bar area. It was an honor to welcome newcomers Susan Breaux, Mary Jane Jacques and Brenda Zubieta, who traveled to Point Clear from Lafayette, Louisiana, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Huntington Beach, California.
The entire Point Clear event was dedicated as a Celebration of Life for Tim Larson, beloved Lafayette SGA member who recently passed away. According to his wife Sandy (a very special SGA FoG), Tim was always trying to connect golfers, even in the hospital at the very end of his life. He and Sandy love the bay area, and have a residence nearby. Tim is dearly missed.
SGA members were happy to see Pam and Wayne Dadetto back again with the group. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful meal and much good conversation.
Three beautiful days of golf, followed by relaxing at the world-class resort and exploring the charming local area, made for a delightful week. The event closed out with dinner and awards in the historic Card Room of the Grand Hotel main building. Event Winners at gross were Mary Jane Jacques and Jay Breaux. "I really enjoyed this trip, my first event with the group." said Mary Jane. "SGA Hall of Fame member Jeff Leech and Sue Arnold are my friends in Pittsburgh. They could not be here this week, but I have been sending them pictures and keeping them updated, and I think they feel they were here, too. Next time, we all will attend together."
"What Susan and I like about SGA is that it's very 'people-friendly,'" said Jay. "We feel very welcomed, and it has been a lot of fun to be with this great group of participants this week. We also bring greetings from the SGA group from our home town of Lafayette, and look forward to another SGA trip soon."
Low Net Winners were Barbara Starkweather and Rick Stallings, who, along with Mary Jane and Jay, won gift certificates and also original prints of the Fairhope/Point Clear area. Runners-up were Wayne Dadetto, Charlene Gideon, Janie Risley, and Ken Rabalais. Putting Contest winners were Jay Caldwell, Charlene Gideon, Brenda Zubieta and Rick Stallings. Best Ball of Team winners were Wayne Dadetto, Charlene Gideon, Brenda Zubieta, and Steve Caldwell. Close to pin winners were Barbara Starkweather, Wayne Dadetto, Charlene Gideon, Mary Jane Jacques, and Ken Rabalais. Daily Net prizes went to Susan Jordan and Dick Starkweather. Congratulations, everyone!

For the Birds of Acadiana
The SGA group enjoyed learning about For the Birds of Acadiana, a wonderful project of SGA Louisiana members Julie and Ken Rabalais. There are 25 rare bird species tracked by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries:the American Oystercatcher, the Red-cockaded Woodpecker, the Swallow-Tailed Kite, the Crested Caracara. Some good news: the Bald Eagle is no longer threatened.
So, who is doing the protecting? Well, it’s not just Wildlife and Fisheries. The effort takes some civilian help. The state issues permits to people like Julie Rabalais, a certified songbird rehabilitator, to operate avian rehabilitation facilities to rehab injured birds that are federally protected. The next two weeks are Giving Weeks in Louisiana, and several of the SGA members contributed their prize winnings to the non-profit, as during this time all contributions will be matched.

Double C Cajun Seasoning & Deer Ranch
A generous and delicious gift was given by winning Best Ball Team member, Steve Caldwell, to participants on the RTJ trip. Steve prepares the special recipe for his Cajun seasoning in conjunction with his Double C Deer Ranch in McComb, Mississippi. The ranch has hosted Wounded Warrior, Make a Wish, and Native America Princess events, and also raises Elk, Red Stag, and Axis Deer. In addition, there are four ponds stocked with catfish, bream, and bass for fishing!
To order your own Cajun seasoning, or to visit or support the ranch, email Steve at smcaldwell@cox.net, or give him a call at 504-338-6769. We recommend it!
