Davis, Meschke Tackle Opioid Use Disorder
Sharon Davis, a clinical associate professor of nursing, and Laurie Meschke, professor of public health, are leading an effort to address opioid abuse disorder in rural East Tennessee. The Rural Communities Opioid Response Program-East Tennessee Consortium (RCORP-ETC) successfully pursued funding from the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration twice.

The Quarterly Research Activity Report for the first quarter of fiscal year 2020 is now available for download on the Office of Research and Engagement website.The Quarterly Research Summary is a fiscal year-to-date comparison of award, proposal, and expenditure data cumulative for July 1, 2019–September 30, 2019.
Matt Mench
Matthew Mench, head of the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering in the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Tickle College of Engineering, has agreed to serve as the university’s interim vice chancellor for research and engagement.

Research Development Academy Launches First Class

Five faculty members from across the UT campus have been selected to participate in the inaugural class of the Research Development Academy (RDA). The RDA focuses on empowering each participant to advance their research, scholarship, and/or creative activities, especially those activities identified in departmental promotion and tenure guidelines.

Vasileios Maroulas, professor in mathematics, is developing a method that employs artificial intelligence to clearly understand the electrical brain activity data conveyed through electroencephalogram monitoring. The Army Research Office has funded Maroulas’s work since 2017.

One in five Tennesseans will be 65 or older by 2040 and the state’s population is estimated to grow by more than 1 million people during that same period, according to the 2018–2070 population projections released this week by the Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research

Stable democracies have long been tied to the cultural values of citizens. But a new study lead by Damian Ruck, anthropology, finds that the stability of democracies worldwide could be vulnerable if certain cultural values decline. The findings are based on survey data from nearly 500,000 individuals from 109 countries.
