Black History Month
Reflecting on the importance of Black history month led us to recall the inspirational history of the office building where Literacy Together carries out our work today.

From 1897 to 1974, the building housed the Allen School, a boarding school for African-American girls. Two of the most well-known graduates include Nina Simone, class valedictorian in 1950 who went on to be known as the "High Priestess of Soul," and Dr. Christine Darden, class valedictorian in 1958, who went on to a distinguished career at NASA whose life was represented in the book Hidden Figures.

Literacy Together staff consider it an honor and an inspiration to work in a location with such a rich history.

Let's celebrate the love of learning!

In honor of Valentine's Day, we'd like to share two success stories of couples that work together to learn English and to teach English.

The first one is about Samuel and Mari. They are husband and wife, and they came from El Salvador without knowing any English. Samuel reached out to Literacy Together first, and then Mari joined him. They're both now taking ESOL classes, and they do homework together!

John and Maggie are ESOL tutors. John joined Literacy Together a few years ago, and he's been working with the same students (also a couple!) since then. Inspired by her husband's dedication and the excitement about his volunteer work, Maggie started tutoring this past fall.

We love our new collaboration with Buncombe County Libraries!

This is Jamie, the Branch Manager of the Fairview Library, where Dolly spent the month of January. Here we can see 5-year-old Jaime dressed up as Dolly for Halloween, SO adorable! Dolly will be at the Enka-Candler Branch Library for the rest of February. Take a selfie with her, and send it to laura@lit-together.org.
