Literacy and Numeracy, Development Milestones, Parenting Advice, and More
Parenting a preschooler can be challenging, and we hope that this newsletter will add to your parenting toolbox by delivering inspiration and expert advice to your inbox each month. Do you have burning parenting questions or a topic that you would like us to cover in a future newsletter? We would love your input! Please contact Nicole Casey at ncasey@fayschool.org with any questions, comments, or feedback.
BOOK CLUB - From Head to Toe
From Head to Toe is a great book to introduce to your child to help them build their gross motor skills. Throughout the book, familiar animals demonstrate different movements for your child to try. To help your child understand the coordination needed for gross motor skills, try reading this book while they watch themselves perform the various movements in a mirror.
LITERACY AND NUMERACY - Subitizing
Subitizing is the ability to “see” and recognize a small number of objects and know instantly how many there are without counting. For young children, it can help develop a strong mathematical foundation and number sense. To work on this skill at home, try the game below that will also get your child excited for the Boston Marathon.
  • Gather a six-sided die, something to write with, and print out this "race to the finish" template.
  • Ask your child to roll their die and mark the squares above the corresponding number with an "X" or by coloring them in.
  • Keep rolling the die and marking the squares off until a number has all four squares marked. The first number to reach all four squares wins the race!
See the newsletter sections below for other Marathon Monday activities and ideas.
ARTS & CRAFTS - Marathon Support Sign
Materials Needed:
  • Poster Board
  • Markers
  • Stickers
Directions:
  • Gather the materials above.
  • Ask your child what motivational message they would like on their sign. Some fun ideas are "just keep running," inspired by Finding Dory, and "finish, you can," inspired by Yoda.
  • Help your child write their message on the poster board. Depending on your child's writing abilities, you can write the words and ask your child to trace them with a marker, or you can write the words out on a separate paper and ask your child to duplicate them on the poster board.
  • Once the message is on the poster board, your child can decorate it with stickers or other favorite craft items.
  • Take your sign to Marathon Monday and cheer the runners on! Check out the Field Trip section below for a great spot to watch the marathon with kids.
DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONE - Fine Motor Skills
A child's fine motor skills are developed through coordination between their small muscles (in their hands, wrists, and fingers) and their eyes. For young children, fine motor skills are important for writing, grasping small objects, putting clothes on, and much more. To work on your child's fine motor skills, try the activities and linked item below.
FIELD TRIP - Boston Marathon
The 126th running of the Boston Marathon will take place on Monday, April 18, and it is a great event for children of all ages to experience. One of the best spots for children to view the marathon is on the hills in Newton between miles 18 and 20. This part of Commonwealth Avenue has a nice grassy area to play on between the road and carriage lane, and the atmosphere is great for families.
