Happy New Year! Welcome to the first edition of the Warrior Family Association e-newsletter for 2023. Our students are already in their third week of classes, and it is wonderful to see campus bustling with activity. Our basketball and hockey teams came back from the holiday break early to continue their seasons, and it’s great to have our students back to cheer them on at their home games. We also celebrated the grand opening of our new Doug Edgar Indoor Track earlier this month at Warrior Park. It was wonderful to honor our longtime track and field coach who has been so influential in the lives of our student-athletes over the years.
Our students have also been busy with the many events coordinated by our Office of Student Engagement during their first week back on campus. We arranged transportation to Headwaters Park in downtown Fort Wayne to an outdoor ice skating rink; we set up a coffee cart for our commuter students; we held a Winter Warm-up in the Rec Center with bingo and bowling; and we hosted a movie in our Magee Theater. I hope your students had fun!
We also announced several new options for our dining services on campus this semester. President Einolf and I host students at our home a couple of times each week, and we regularly ask students what we can do differently and better at Indiana Tech. As you might imagine, food comes up a lot! We were happy that we were able to make some changes to improve the student experience, and we included a section in the e-newsletter below to describe these changes to you.
Our Zollner Engineering Center expansion and renovation project continues, as the second phase (of three) was completed over the holiday break. Our students were able to begin using the middle section of the building which will provide them with more access to engineering and science laboratories. We are excited about the new opportunities that our students have, and we are especially grateful that our students have been patient and flexible throughout the construction process.

Check Out the Career Center!Welcome to the Career Center! Under the leadership of our new director, Amy Deitrickson, the Career Center will embark on a mission to prepare and guide our students throughout their entire career here at Indiana Tech—and after!
We are working hard to bring in new employer partnerships and connections with the help of Greg Leach, our employer and community outreach coordinator. Our goal is to reach your student long before they graduate. We will do that with classroom integration, employer/student connections on and off campus, network-building internships, and a total focus on making sure that upon graduation, your student is ready to tackle the real world and confidently go after the career they so desire. We have even moved to a new job and internship search platform called Handshake, which connects us with thousands of employers from all around the world and millions of opportunities for our students and alumni. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us via email at CareerCenter@indianatech.edu or connect with us on Handshake!

Steven Malloris
Director, Honors Program; Associate Professor of English
- Although I may not understand the game of "six degrees removed from Kevin Bacon," I am only one degree removed, I think. I was in Greenwich Village years ago—I stepped out of a hotel, stopped at a red light and there was Kevin Bacon. I stared and he gave me an unfriendly wave.
- I sat at a little café in the Sahara Desert, and before me was the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx of Giza—a sight I shall never forget.
- I placed a $2 bet on a horse at Churchill Downs and won $100. The horse had the same name of a cat we had.

- I met my husband while attending Indiana Tech.
- I practiced martial arts with my family and received my Kukkiwon.

- I switched my major five times in college!
- I played doubles tennis in high school and we fell one match short of being state champs.
- I love to work late at night. I rarely go to bed before 1 or 2 a.m.
- I love the four boys in my life—my husband, two sons and one very sweet puppy!

Final thoughts from a fellow mom
We had a nice holiday season visiting family and friends, although it already feels like a distant memory. How does it go by so fast? I am sure you feel the same way I do—the time with my sons is so nice, but in no time, they have to get back to their busy lives. Our son, Nicholas, who lives in Pittsburgh, continues with a job search, as he decided to make a change in his career this past year. He is getting great advice from Indiana Tech’s Career Center (he’s a graduate of Indiana Tech!), so I am hopeful he’ll find something soon.
Our son, Thomas, who is in New York City doing a doctoral program at Columbia University in math education, decided to put his studies into practice by taking on a teaching position. He’ll be spending his days teaching high school math at the St. Catharine Academy in the Bronx, and then taking his own classes in the evening. I am sure his weekends will be very busy preparing lessons and studying for his classes.
I hope you all have a happy and healthy new year.
