Welcome to our second CHDCM newsletter of the new academic year! I hope that these early weeks of the semester have treated you well, and that—as we all await the arrival of truly Fall-like weather—you’re enjoying the events and traditions that populate the calendar at this time of year. For those celebrating Rosh Hashanah over the weekend, wishing you a good year!
One of my favorite academic events from this time of year also occurred last week: the CHDCM Convocation! This is always a great celebration of our community, and a way to help welcome all those news folks joining our College this year, whether students, faculty, or administrators. I want to thank everyone who joined us for the fun last Thursday, which included a welcome to our newest community members, the premiere of our 2025-26 highlight video, our departmental pep rally, and an amazing lunch—complete with coffee bar and the famous Scream Truck! I absolutely love this event, and so I appreciated the energy and enthusiasm everyone brought to the day!
As with last year, we also released the first in our 2026-27 CHDCM Sticker Series, and—as we did last year—we’ll continue to release these throughout the academic year at select CHDCM events. Collect 10 of this year’s series, and get a special Dean’s Prize! This year, we’re also going to be announcing a student CHDCM sticker design contest—stay tuned….for this and several other new and exciting College initiatives coming soon!
With that, though, I’ll close off my part of this newsletter and let you get to the good stuff! There’s a lot to check out in the stories below about the members of our CHDCM community….so read on! As always, keep your good news and event notes coming, and I look forward to seeing you all around campus in the coming days and weeks…

Crystal Smith-Morgan, Ph.D.

Congratulations to Dr. Crystal Smith-Morgan, who developed the national American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT)-approved 6-CE course, "Social Justice Advocacy: Leading Change in Complex Systems," designed to deepen clinicians’ understanding of intersectionality, systems of power, and the ethical foundations of justice-centered advocacy.
Smith-Morgan also co-developed two national AAMFT-approved courses informed by the AAMFT 2025 Workforce Study: Starting Strong: Foundations for MFT Private Practice and Beyond Solo Practice: Advanced Growth Pathways for MFTs. Together, the courses address essential business foundations, ethical and culturally responsive practice, leadership, specialization, and sustainable growth for emerging and experienced clinicians. Smith-Morgan also contributed a dedicated module to Starting Strong, titled “Crafting an Ethical Inclusive Practice: Embedding Culture and Ethics into Everyday Business Decisions,” integrating cultural responsiveness and ethical decision-making into everyday business practices.

Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ)
The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) is a nationwide organization for journalists of all ages and status. SPJ helps educate the next generation, recognize outstanding achievement, promote ethics, and unite journalists in the United States to ensure the free practice of journalism continues in the U.S.
The SPJ Chapter at Seton Hall University began in early 2025 and found its legs in the spring of 2026, hosting speaker events that highlighted prominent SHU alums like Bernie Wagenblast '78 and Francesca Regalado '17. Personal experiences navigating both SHU and the journalism field help inspire and guide current students to better prepare themselves for the job market.
| |
This year SPJ plans to continue highlighting SHU alums in the journalism field as well as bringing in other professionals to provide stories and advice for upcoming journalists. While keeping the organization's focus on journalism students and potential SPJ members, they also hope to widen the reach of their events to be open to anyone interested as journalism is a public good that impacts the lives of everyone.

Nicole Elyukin, a student in the Counseling Psychology program, is currently completing an APA-accredited internship at the James J. Peters Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bronx, NY. Throughout her doctoral training, Nicole has developed a strong interest in integrated healthcare, particularly in the area of reproductive health. She completed an externship at the Zucker Hillside Perinatal Psychiatry Clinic, where she provided individual, group, and couples therapy to individuals experiencing challenges related to fertility, perinatal loss, and the pregnancy and postpartum periods. In addition to supporting veterans with a broad range of presenting concerns, she has sought opportunities to work with women veterans experiencing reproductive health-related challenges, including PMDD and postpartum depression.
Currently, Nicole is analyzing interview data for her dissertation, which explores mental health challenges during perimenopause. Her research takes a socioecological perspective, examining how interpersonal, cultural, and structural contexts shape experiences of the perimenopause transition. Across both her clinical work and research, Nicole is passionate about advocating for approaches to health that recognize the complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social determinants of well-being. After graduation, Nicole hopes to pursue post-doctoral training in reproductive health psychology and build a career that integrates clinical practice, research, and teaching.
