Dear Spartan,
The 2023-24 Housing and Roommate Preference forms are now open in your My Housing account! These forms must be completed by Wednesday, June 7. Please read the following carefully as it outlines important information!
As you may be aware, incoming students will not select their own space. Students will indicate their housing preferences, which include chosen roommate if applicable, and will be assigned a room based on those preferences this summer.
Housing Preferences Need to Know
-
Housing preferences open this week and close June 7.
- There is no benefit to completing your housing preferences early. If you need time to make your choices, that is ok!
- Read and understand both the Hierarchy of Assignment and Living-learning Community rules outlined below.
-
You can find all this sign-up information and more here.
Hierarchy of Assignment
When completing your housing preferences, it is important to keep in mind the hierarchy of assignment, meaning some preferences outweigh others. Our priority is to maintain roommate groups, given that has been what our Spartans have asked for the most. To do that, you must ensure you fully understand how preferences work.
-
Gender-inclusive Housing and Alcohol-free Housing: The Housing Assignments Office will honor the selection of Gender-inclusive Housing and Alcohol-free Housing above all other preferences.
-
Living-learning Communities: Each Living-learning Community (LLC) has its own rules in place for roommates being in the LLC or out of the LLC. If your chosen roommate is not in your LLC, and an in-LLC roommate is required, your roommate choice will be disregarded.
-
Roommate Preferences: The Housing Assignments Office will do their best to honor your roommate and suitemate choices. Please ensure your roommate fits any rules required by your LLC, if applicable.
- Bathroom Style Preferences: Your bathroom style preferences will factor in based on available space.
Roommate Group Form
If you are requesting a specific roommate or suitemates, you must create a roommate group in your My Housing account. If you do not create and or accept a roommate group, you will not be assigned to a space with your chosen roommate or suitemates.
- One student will be responsible for creating the roommate group; this person is known as the “Group Leader.” They will select the "Create or Update Roommate Group" link and complete the form.
- The Group Leader will invite their roommates to the roommate group by using their MSU Email.
-
Group members must have a signed housing contract to be added to the roommate group.
- Once invited, the Group Members will need to accept or deny the invite in My Housing via the "Create or Update Roommate Group" link.
- All members of the roommate group must accept their invitations by June 7.
-
Roommate Groups must be created in your My Housing account!
We highly recommend you have an open, honest conversation with your potential roommates on your preferences. When roommate groups are broken because of the preference changes, there can be confusion and frustration; because we are unable to share specific reasons why the roommate group is broken with other students due to privacy concerns, it is the responsibility of each student to have that conversation with their roommate.
My College Roomie
You will soon receive an invitation to My College Roomie, MSU’s roommate matching app. If you are looking for a roommate and would like to choose your roommate rather than be assigned one at random, we encourage you to use My College Roomie. There, you will be able to filter your preferences and find someone who matches your living style. Once you make a match in My College Roomie, you will still need to make a roommate group in your My Housing account!
Roommate Matching Form
If you are not requesting a specific roommate, go into My Housing and select the "Complete Housing Preferences and Roommate Matching Form" link. The form will ask for dining plan selection, bathroom style preferences, and requests for Alcohol-free Floors and Honors Floors. Then it will ask a series of questions to help with roommate assignments.
Gender-inclusive Housing
We are pleased to offer Gender-inclusive Housing (GIH) to our new and returning students. GIH means that, in select spaces, students from all gender identities and expressions may choose to live together. If you would like to live in GIH, select the "Complete Gender-inclusive Housing Form" link by June 7.
Living-learning Communities
If you are part of a Residential College or Living-learning Community (LLC), your program has specific housing locations and roommate rules. We will first and foremost place students in accordance with their LLC, meaning if your housing preferences do not match the LLC rules, the LLC rules will take precedence. The Roommate Group form will not allow roommates that do not meet LLC housing guidelines.
If a student has questions about roommates or housing requirements for an LLC program, students should contact their program directly.
