Hillary Pinney
Hillary Pinney Knows the Ticket to Outstanding Customer Service
A PDX volunteer shared this story when nominating Hillary Pinney (she/her) for being exceptionally empathetic in a difficult situation:
"A family approached the information booth and explained that they had arrived in Portland, Oregon, rather than their intended destination of Portland, Maine. They were frazzled, confused and disillusioned.
I walked the family upstairs to talk to a Delta agent to see if there was anything that could be done. While standing in line, I engaged more with the family and their story began to take shape. They landed in Portland via Phoenix, where they had arrived from the Congo.
Delta agent Hillary greeted us at the ticket counter, and after some research, she determined that the tickets had been purchased through a travel agency. Unfortunately, she was unable to reach the agency to try and fix the mix-up. Hillary went to work to try to get discounted tickets for the family, who shared that they had very limited funds after their travels. Debbie Cituk, the Delta station manager, gave Hillary the go-ahead to escalate the request for rebooking. After almost two hours of helping the family, Hillary was able to book them to fly out that night to Portland, Maine.
Throughout the entire encounter, Hillary was friendly, compassionate, curious and tenacious! She went the extra mile to help them reach their destination where relatives were waiting for them. Thank you for being an incredible PDX ambassador, Hillary! It was a pleasure to watch you work your magic."

What's New with PDX Next: Ticket Lobby Demolition and Concourse C Work
Ticket Lobby: There will be impacts in the ticket lobby as workers connect the new roof to the existing one, and crews are currently installing overhead protection to keep everyone safe when demolition occurs. The first demo begins the week of June 5, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will be in the D/E overflow queue area. Impacts will include loud noise and vibration.
Next week – likely on Wednesday – you'll hear loud noise for short durations as crews measure sound and test different mitigation techniques. We know working through construction is challenging and we'll continue to keep you in the loop here in the newsletter, on the PDX People website and on digital signage in the bypass areas.
Concourse C: A crew will be cutting and welding the temporary roof protection materials at the far east end of Concourse C from 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30, until 3 a.m. the next day. All work will be performed in the construction zone east of Concourse C, at the top of the weather wall next to The Market. As a precaution, access to The Market area on Concourse C will be closed during this activity and the area will be blocked off with a spotter present. There will be loud noise and vibrations, but no impact to the south bypass, pet relief area or nearby restrooms.

"Garden of People: A Portrait of Cottage Grove, Oregon" Blooms on Concourse B
A wondrous, thought-provoking, salon style exhibition of 43 masterful portraits and landscapes now populate a sizeable wall on Concourse B. Artist Uyen-Thi Nguyen created this engaging public project titled, "Garden of People: A Portrait of Cottage Grove, Oregon," to celebrate people and question that which defines and divides us and our understanding of one another. The dozens of portraits are juxtaposed with demographic data and personal interviews placed anonymously, removing the pre-judgment of appearances. Through this layering, you create a story for the paintings and build a picture of society, constructing a tapestry through your own filter.

Airport Security is About to Get Way Faster Thanks to New Technology
Getting through airport security is probably the least fun part of traveling, but the Transportation Security Administration has been rolling out new technology to make this necessary step a bit easier. Credential Authentication Technology allows travelers to get through security without having to show a boarding pass or, in some cases, even a physical ID. The machines come in two forms, a CAT-1 machine, and a more advanced CAT-2 machine – which uses facial recognition – and can significantly speed up the security process. Hidden Gems at PDX: Hollywood Theatre Spring Lineup and Calliope Rotating Art Display
Did you know you can find pint-sized art appreciation spots at PDX? There's a mini art gallery in Calliope on Concourse E and the Hollywood Theatre microcinema on Concourse C.
Calliope's artist-in-residence program provides a platform for local artists to showcase their work at PDX. Currently they're featuring fiber artist Jo Noble, who discovered the joy of creating art with fabric after moving to Uganda. You can see more of Jo's work at her trunk show on Friday, June 2.
Over at the PDX Hollywood Theatre microcinema, the new spring lineup includes short films about a robot with a great joke to share, local songwriter Mike Long and one of Portland’s most iconic bridges. The roster also features "Old Talks with New Icons" – presented in partnership with the Port of Portland's art program – which highlights the work of Philip A. Robinson Jr., whose art is on display in the south bypass at PDX.
