April 2019
April Greetings from the Hill
We're talking about some great networking strategies this month, specifically, making the most of your LinkedIn profile and using informational interviews to learn about career paths, particular companies and jobs, grad schools, and more. Finally, don't forget: Applications for the Professional Development Fund for Tufts Alumni are due this Monday!
Professional Development Fund for Alumni -- Apply now
Thinking about enrolling in a workshop or attending a professional conference, but the cost is holding you back? The Tufts University Alumni Association provides an annual fund to support Jumbos’ careers post-graduation. Alumni are encouraged to apply for financial support for their professional development needs including professional organization membership and conference attendance, continuing education and training, and costs associated with certification and licensure. Please share with your Tufts network.  Deadline to apply is April 15!

Spotlight on ... Spring Cleaning for Your LinkedIn Profile
Haven't updated your LinkedIn profile in forever? (Don't worry; we won't tell. And hey, you're not alone!) But because this tends to be the #1 source of info when someone -- potential employer or another professional contact -- googles your name, it's worth the effort to freshen it up. Here are some suggestions:

FAQ of the Month
I've thought about setting up informational interviews to learn about career options and organizations that interest me, but I'm not sure where to start. Are they really that helpful?

YES! And because we love analogies, let's pretend you need to grab lunch. You have two options: A) The place you found online and know nothing about or B) the place endorsed by a number of friends. Where do you go?

Most of us would choose Option B, of course. So why not apply this line of thinking to career exploration? Just as chatting with friends can break the tie between Pad Thai and sushi, "interviewing" fellow grad students, professors, Tufts alumni and other professionals adds valuable information to your career research. It also helps expand your network, such that when someone is looking for a person with your skills, members of your network might even recommend you.
