Mongan ReflectionsFrom the Director

How does high impact science get made?
The conventional response is that good science is produced by a researcher who identifies a fundamental research question with high public health significance who then conducts a well-designed study to confirm or disprove a specific study hypothesis. A more contemporary description recognizes that real innovation and breakthroughs require a high functioning team of collaborative researchers with complementary backgrounds and skills. But this also falls well short of the real story. The bed rock of high impact science ultimately depends on the skills and efforts the staff who provide support and essential work that is critical to conducting the research, including project managers, research assistants, and research administrators. As science has become increasingly complex, research administration has become a science unto itself. The extraordinary productivity of the Mongan Institute is ultimately dependent on the work of our highly talented and hard-working research management staff.
In this month’s reflections, it is with great appreciation and deep pride that we celebrate they special distinction achieved by several of Mongan’s research administrators. During the pandemic Lisa Morse and Beth Walker-Corkery took it upon themselves to engage in a rigorous course of study in preparation to become Certified Research Administrators. Lisa and Beth attended a virtual course offered by Virginia Tech and formed a self-study group to prepare for a four-hour, 250-item examination to achieve the designation of Certified Research Administrator (CRA). This examination included such topics as grant funding agencies, proposal development, budget preparation, contracting, administering awards, bioethics, human subjects, regulation, financial management…...just to name a few! With Lisa and Beth achieving this certification, along with Jodi Kurtz who previously achieved the designation of CRA in 2014, the Mongan Institute is extremely fortunate to have three experts as Certified Research Administrators, among only 20 CRA’s at Massachusetts General Hospital.
To paraphrase Chris Trimble, a former colleague at Dartmouth and co-author of “The Other Side of Innovation”: “Innovation in health care research is easy, execution is hard”. It is with great pleasure that we recognize the special accomplishments of Lisa, Beth, and Jodi, as well as our entire extraordinary staff of research administrators who are core to the success of the Mongan Institute, and truly essential to our overall mission of “high impact science”.
