News That Rocks

Summer, Summer, SUMMER!

"I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again in the summer."
We're back to rockin'!  Our shows were THE BEST thing we've done since this whole thing started.  Check out Summer 2020 at School of Rock Silver Spring!

We Got to ROCK Our Shows Again!  Woot!

You know that saying 'where there's a will, there's a way'?  We were not sure we were going to be able to do any performance this season, but we found a safe way to get together and ROCK!  Thanks to our sister school SOR Vienna who offered up their space, we took over their parking lot and played THREE shows for an all day extravaganza.  There was magic in the air as these students, who had not been able to rehearse one song together since March, just stepped up and played SO WELL.  And we are talking hard material!  Such a tribute to how hard they have worked this season in spite of the set backs.  Very proud of these amazing young musicians.

Meet Rob Brewsaugh - Our New Studio Manager

We are delighted to introduce you to our new Studio Manager, Rob!  Rob has been on board for awhile getting to know our rock school ways and is now ready to handle School of Rock Silver Spring!  Rob comes to us with a wealth of operational experience.  A musician in his own right, he started his musical journey when he was 6 years old as a drummer. He grew up playing in school and then found a love for guitar, bass and vocals and still plays all of these instruments to this day. Rob has had a background as a professional drummer and vocalist in a touring band out of Baltimore, MD. He has an immense passion for music and is a firm believer that the future of the performing arts lies in the hands of our youth and is excited to provide an amazing experience for every student.  Please be sure to say Hi the next time you call.  Rob can be reached on rbrewsaugh@schoolofrock.com or you can text or call him on our school line 301-589-7625.
P.S.  Laura will still be very active in our day-to-day operations, so if you need her do not hesitate to reach out.

Summer Music Programs Are Ready to Rock!

We want to start off by saying safety is our number one concern and we have been working with a team of medical advisors to ensure we are covering all the bases, have proper protocols in place to keep the rock rolling and our students and staff safe.  We realize that each family has different needs and concerns so we are pleased to be offering in person and online options that ROCK.  Read on for more information.

In Person Rehearsal & Show Options

We're keeping our Performance Program rehearsal groups small - 5 or less band members who will stay together through out the summer.  They will come for rehearsal in a socially distanced setting, be screened upon entry and wear masks + more.  These bands can work on material from our three show themes:  Synchronicity, The Jimi Hendrix Experience or Bad Brains.  We are happy to discuss our safety protocols with you in detail so please reach out with any questions by calling Rob on 301-589-7625.

Learn How to Write Songs in our Online Classes

Creating original songs can be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences for musicians. Our *NEW* Songwriting Program teaches the fundamentals of songwriting, arrangement and music theory, and helps students compose original works. Students have one weekly private lesson on an instrument of their choice where they learn concepts, technique and theory. These principles are then applied in weekly group lessons where students work together on songwriting exercises and lyrical workshops. Every few months, Songwriting Program students take the stage to perform or band together to record their original songs. Students taking the Songwriting Program online will remotely record their original songs to produce a demo of the class's music.

Rock Online in our *NEW* Epic Albums  Program

Mike Ruby, instructor extraordiaire from our Vienna location, will be leading this new program that gets students learning to rock as a band in a recording environment. Students will recreate an Epic Album - this time it's The Cranberries debut album Everybody's Doing It, So Why Can't We - and will learn not only the music but how they got their sound and final recordings.  No special equipment required and students can dive as deeply as they like into the tech side as the desire or simply have fun rocking the tunes.
About Mike... He is a professional bassist and educator. Having recently moved to the DC area, Mike played and taught in Chicago for 10 years, after graduating Columbia College with a BA in Music. While in Chicago, Mike recorded with and co-produced hip-hop project House Of Whales. He also played in numerous bands that played genres ranging from indie rock to blues. Mike has had the pleasure of opening for B.B. King and studying with musicians such as Joan Osborne, Christian McBride, Nicholas Tremulis and Chuck Webb. Mike is excited to share his expertise and excitement for this fun recording project with the SOR DC Area students. Call us for more information on 301-589-7625.
