Summer 2022 Season!

End of Season Shows, A  New Season, Camps and More!

Read all about it!
The Spring 2022 Performance Program Shows!
In the first two weekends of June the Performance Program put on two amazing shows. For the first on Saturday June 4th, the casts of the Smith vs. The Cure Paramore and Funkytown rocked the Fountain Stage in Downtown Silver Spring. It was a perfect day for an outdoor show and we definitely got the whole block rocking.  For the second show on Sunday June 12th we rocked Songbyrd Music House in NE DC. They were blown away by our students' talent so there is a good chance this won't be the last time this venue will open their doors for us to play.  All the students hard work over the course of the season was on full display for these shows. We couldn't be more proud of what they accomplished. We also said a bittersweet good bye to our graduating seniors at this show. I'm not crying, you're crying.

The Summer 2022 Adult Performance Program!

Our Adult Performance Program is back in action this Summer again with Jaime as director.  Sign ups began last month and we started seeing some familiar names on the roster.  Some are returning from last season and some are returning from the performance program that got cut short due to covid a couple of years ago. We are thrilled to have them back and welcome some new members as well.  This season they will be exploring the mid-1960s cultural phenomenon known as “The British Invasion” referring to the sudden and ubiquitous popularity of British rock and roll among the American youth of the time. The catalog of music created by these artists - including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and The Kinks among others - propelled rock and roll music to the mainstream of cultural relevance where it remains to this day. The British Invasion bands took inspiration from blues, folk, and early rock and roll and combined these influences in an exciting way that can teach both our students and audiences the foundation of modern pop and rock music.  Rehearsals begin on July 7th!

Houseband at Blues Fest!

Our House Band was back at it again this month playing at the annual Silver Spring Blues Fest! This is an event we look forward to every year and we were so happy to be back rocking out right in our backyard in Downtown Silver Spring on a beautiful June Saturday. The set included classics from Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn as well as more modern blues rock bands like The Black Keys. We had a great crowd and our 30 minute set went over so well that they asked us to stretch it to 45 minutes. Our band handled it like pros, playing an additional four songs and knocking them all out of the park! We can't wait for next year!

Summer 2022 is Rockin' Across America!

The Performance Program shows this Summer will be exploring the sound and musical history of three American Cities: Philadelphia, Seattle, and Chicago. There is a lot of work that goes into the start of each season. The first round of casting went out two weeks before the students had their first reheasals in the last week of June. Our directors this season report that the casts came well prepared and the first week of rehearsals went very well. This season will showcase a wide variety of artists and genres we haven't recently explored here at School of Rock so we are super excited for this great american roadtrip!

Student Spotlight!

Katherine
This month we have choosen to spotlight Katherine. Katherine came to us as a camper last year and we quickly absorbed them into our year round programming as a bassist.  She jumped right into the Fall season of Performance Program with our  Beatles show. In Spring she was cast in the Smith vs The Cure and she is currently cast in the Philadelphia show this Summer.  We are getting to see a lot of Katherine this summer.  In addition to her regular lessons, and Performance Program she will also be taking part in camps and has even started giving back to our community by being a camp intern! Jeff sat down with Katherine to ask her a few questions and here's what she had to say.

You've experienced School of Rock camp as an intern and camper, what do you like about the summer programs?
Watching the kids grow into talented musicians

How would you say your playing has changed since joining SoR?
It's improved so much that I can learn a
song in a day as opposed to sitting in my bed working on tabs

What are your musical influences?

People who inspire me to keep practicing are the teachers and other students, my musical influences are punk rock icons like Amanda Palmer

What do you like about School of Rock?
The community!

What has been your favorite show at School of Rock?
I've only been in a few shows so far, but I think the upcoming Philly show will be the best yet!

Anything you'd like to say about your current bass instructor Colin?
Colin is really fun to talk to, and he is a good teacher

What advice do you have for new students?
Make friends. Even if a song is hard don't give up. Try new instruments!

THOUGHTS FROM THE MOTHERSHIP
with Our Music Director -  Brooks
TRY SOMETHING NEW - Have you ever been interested in trying a second instrument?  Summer is a great time to experiment with something new. Maybe it's trying out a keys part in your Performance Program show, or learning the bass part if you normally play guitar. We can always use more vocalists, so if you're interested ask your director about singing a background part or adding a vocal harmony. Summer is a great time to start taking an additional weekly lesson as well. With all the free time that summer can bring and people missing from rehearsals, now is a great time to try something new and become a more well rounded musician!

Summer Camps are in Full Swing!!

We kicked off our Summer camp season on June 20th and have Camp experiences thorugh August 12th.  This camp season we added two Rookies camps that took place in June. These had out youngest campers learning the fundementals of music through game based learning and crafts and were introduced to the instruments that we teach at SOR. Our year round Rookies classes are on Sunday afternoon and there are spots available. Their is still room in our Rock 101 and Performance camps in July and August and can be purchased by clicking HERE. They are a perfect preview of what we do year round in our groups. Our camp shows are each Friday at 3 Stars Brewing Co. at 3pm and are open to the public.
