Career Fair set for Oct. 19 |

The fall Journalism Career Fair is set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 19, at Stauffer-Flint Hall. It’s a great opportunity for all students to connect with close to 30 media companies, public relations and communications firms and digital marketing companies to learn more about internships and jobs. A professional photographer will be on site between 11 a.m.-2 p.m. to take headshots for students’ LinkedIn profiles. As of today, here are the organizations who have committed to the event:

Associate Professor Teri Finneman has been nominated and selected to be recognized as part of the Salute to Faculty Excellence Program. Finneman will be recognized on the field during a sponsored timeout or similar moment during the KU football game vs. BYU on Sept. 23. There will also be an audio announcement and on-screen display highlighting her accomplishments.
In addition to her associate professor title, Finneman is the publisher of the Eudora Times, a nationally recognized news desert publication that she runs with journalism students. She is the founder and executive producer of the Journalism History podcast and oversees the Journalism History journal.

Gerri Berendzen has been appointed to the Communications and Publication Committee of ACES: The Society for Editing. The seven-member committee is charged with increasing member engagement across all communications platforms operated by the society and with helping drive communications strategy. In May, Berendzen presented an hour-long program for the ACES Academy training platform titled “Facts Matter: Ensuring credibility through editing.” The presentation covered how to recognize red flags in writing and strategies for working with writers to recognize and correct errors before publication.

Professor Hyunjin Seo is chair of the interdisciplinary committee for the Five-Year Review of the Institute for Policy & Social Research. The committee is charged with evaluating effectiveness of the Institute for Policy and Social Research in carrying out its mission and providing suggestions for enhancing the center’s national stature and competitiveness.
Professor Yvonnes Chen, an honors faculty fellow, attended Honors Program Convocation on Aug. 20. In her capacity as faculty fellow, Chen builds community and inspires intellectual engagement through her teaching, academic program development and individual mentoring of students.
Professor Yvonnes Chen presented at the 2023 KU Teaching Summit on the topic of "Cross-Campus Approach to Support Resilience and Mindfulness in Weary, Wescoe 4007 Burned-Out Students." Her co-presenters are faculty from the School of Nursing (Deana Wilhoite) and School of Music (Deanna Hanson-Abromeit).
Associate Professor Doug Ward also presented at the Summit.

Brianne Pfannenstiel, who is currently the Des Moines Register Chief Politics Reporter, will speak at the Dole Institute of Politics on Aug. 31 at 5:30 p.m. when it hosts its kick-off event "Party on the Patio: All Eyes on Iowa," moderated by SAB coordinator Allie Haggar. Pfannenstiel will give an inside look at her experience covering past presidential races.
Drop-in advising available: If you have any questions or need to meet with someone to discuss your classes or goals, an advisor is available from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday in Stauffer-Flint Hall, Room 117.

Internship Experience: Emma Saville, Trozzolo |
|
|
As a copywriter intern with the integrated marketing agency Trozzolo, Emma Saville wrote in a variety of ways for a wide range of real clients such as Prairie Dog, Kansas City Aviation Department and Ronald McDonald House of Kansas City, to name a few. She also wrote email newsletters, postcard headlines, social media ads and sample language for campaigns and much more.

The Career and Outreach Office is collecting names of guests scheduled to speak at the J-School in 2023-24 as part of The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications’ professional and public service recommendations. Also, Steve Rottinghaus, career and outreach coordinator, is interested in following up with alumni speakers as potential Cheers to Careers podcast guests, and Evan Riggs, communications coordinator, is looking to connect with speakers for potential content on the J-School website and social media platforms. If you are willing to share your speaker information, please email the speaker’s name, job title, company name, contact information, date they are scheduled to speak and name of class to steve_rottinghaus@ku.edu.

KU alums among award winners |

The Kansas Association of Broadcasters (KAB) Station Excellence Award winners were recently announced, and alums of the University of Kansas School of Journalism and Mass Communications account for 29 of the awards handed out. There were 785 entries into the contest this year.
The complete list of winners and the winner's gallery are both available to be viewed. This year's winners will be recognized during the KAB Annual Convention in Overland Park on Oct. 23.
