Texas Nonprofit Strong launches a new chapter centering sector awareness & engagement |
As Texas nonprofits continue to srengthen communities, drive economic growth, and respond to some of the most pressing challenges facing our state, we are excited to share the next evolution of Texas Nonprofit Strong. As the initiative continues to grow, we have refreshed the Texas Nonprofit Strong website to focus more intentionally on awareness and engagement, helping nonprofit professionals, community leaders, and supporters better understand the scope and impact of Texas’ nonprofit sector and advocate for our needs. Centered around the insights and data from the Built for Texas report, the updated platform offers a clearer picture of the opportunities, challenges, and economic contributions shaping nonprofits across our state while equipping organizations with tools to help elevate their voice and tell their story.
As part of this transition, many of the resources previously housed on the site are now being stewarded directly through OneStar and our partners at United Ways of Texas. Through OneStar’s website, nonprofit professionals will still be able to discover upcoming events and professional development opportunities, while also connecting with statewide nonprofit networks and capacity-building support services designed to strengthen organizations and communities alike. Together, we remain committed to building a more informed, connected, and resilient nonprofit sector that is ready to lead Texas into the future.

Celebrating the spirit of service across Texas at Governor's Volunteer Awards ceremony |
On April 29, we were honored to celebrate the recipients of the 42nd Annual Governor’s Volunteer Awards, recognizing the extraordinary individuals, organizations, and businesses whose service is strengthening communities across Texas. Hosted at the Governor’s Mansion, the ceremony highlighted the powerful ways volunteers bring people together, meet critical community needs, and inspire others to take action through compassion and leadership.
We are grateful to First Lady Cecilia Abbott for her commitment to uplifting volunteerism and civic engagement throughout our state as honorary chair, and to Governor Greg Abbott for continuing Texas’ proud tradition of recognizing service and celebrating those who give their time and talents.
To this year’s award recipients, congratulations and thank you for the lasting impact you are making in communities across Texas! Your dedication reminds us that service has the power to strengthen connections, inspire hope, and build a brighter future for all Texans.

Coming soon: Strong Families Tax Credit program opens new path for community investment |
The Strong Families Tax Credit program, administered by OneStar in partnership with the Texas Comptroller’s Office, creates a powerful opportunity for businesses to invest in nonprofits serving at-risk families across Texas. Beginning Monday, June 1, eligible nonprofits can begin applying to OneStar to become a certified organization authorized to participate in the program. Qualified contributions made to certified nonprofits may be eligible as a franchise tax credit for the donor.
Details on the nonprofit certification process and Frequently Asked Questions are available on OneStar’s website. Information on the franchise tax credit process will be available from the Texas Comptroller’s later Office this summer. The first step is for eligible nonprofits to become certified, so now is the time for nonprofits to consider if they might be eligible and prepare for the application process!

El Paso leaders highlight community impact of AmeriCorps for federal leaders |
OneStar recently joined Texas Congresswoman Veronica Escobar and AmeriCorps Chief of Staff Mark Lloyd in El Paso for a day highlighting the impact and reach of national service across Texas communities. The visit began at El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank, where leaders met with the AmeriCorps NCCC team serving on the ground and witnessed how AmeriCorps members are helping meet urgent community needs. The day continued with a OneStar-facilitated roundtable alongside Equal Heart, the City of El Paso, Centro De Salud Familiar La Fe, and El Paso ISD, bringing together a diverse group of local partners, volunteers, and community leaders committed to strengthening outcomes through service. Earlier, AmeriCorps leadership also visited El Paso ISD to see firsthand how AmeriCorps programming is supporting students and schools across the region.
This convening reflected the strength of cross-sector and bipartisan engagement in elevating national service as a proven, high-impact model for community support and workforce development. We are deeply grateful to Congresswoman Escobar and AmeriCorps leadership for their partnership and for taking the time to engage directly with local programs and hear from those serving on the ground. Their shared commitment underscores how AmeriCorps continues to unite leaders across perspectives in support of stronger, more resilient communities! OneStar extends sincere thanks to all participating organizations for helping demonstrate the power of collaboration in action across Texas.

| Rebuild Texas Fund expands support for Central Texas flood recovery |
The Rebuild Texas Fund awarded an additional $2.54 million in grants to Central Texas Long-Term Recovery Groups this month, reinforcing a locally driven approach to long-term recovery. These investments support a wide range of critical projects, including community infrastructure and park reconstruction, flood-resilient redevelopment planning, structural repair and rebuilding assistance, skilled labor and volunteer support, and financial support for families and small businesses. From extensive repairs and reconstruction to case management and recovery navigation, these grants are designed to meet both immediate needs and long-term resilience goals.
In late March, we had the opportunity to visit with the dedicated leaders of the Kerr Together Long-Term Recovery Group, which continues to guide local flood recovery efforts. Their ongoing work reflects extraordinary compassion, coordination, and commitment to rebuilding stronger, more resilient communities. Through the Rebuild Texas Fund, we are honored to stand alongside these local partners and others across the Hill Country as they lead recovery efforts rooted in community voice and local expertise. We remain committed to supporting communities across Central Texas on the long road to recovery.

A Milestone of Service: 20 Years of Impactful Leadership |
This month, we are proud to celebrate the 20-year work anniversary of our fearless leader President & CEO Chris Bugbee, whose steady leadership and deep commitment to service have helped shape stronger communities across Texas. Since 2006, Chris has led with authenticity, care, and an unwavering belief in the power of people working together for good, and his impact is felt in every corner of our organization and the communities we serve. Last month, we had the privilege of honoring him with a signed certificate from the Governor of Texas, a commemorative Texas flag that flew over the State Capitol, and a special gift from the OneStar board in recognition of his two decades of dedicated service. We deeply appreciate his enduring leadership and are even more grateful for the heart he brings to this work every day!
