Navigating the Holidays with Parkinson's
Living with Parkinson’s shouldn’t mean that you miss out on holiday celebrations and fun. Proper self-care and preparation can help you avoid the stress and anxiety, while enjoying the season.
- Pay Attention to Your Needs
- It’s important to take care of yourself and to maintain the routines that help you navigate living with the disease.Â
- Be mindful about what invitations you accept and what “hustle and bustle” you take on. Choose only those that truly bring you joy.Â
- Find someone to help you navigate the hustle and bustle. Do not be afraid to reach out for help.
- It is important to mentally prepare for the elevated activity during the holiday season.Â
- Be social at your own pace and ability. Being around friends and family will do wonders for your mental health.
- Stay On Track With Medications
- Ensure that you have enough medication for holiday travel and busier schedules. Make a list of medications and when they should be taken and refilled.
- If traveling, make sure your travel partner is aware of your medications, as well as local emergency medical services.Â
- Keep Up Your Exercise Routine
- If you are traveling, scope out how you will keep on your routine ahead of time. Check out where the local gyms are, if there is a Parkinson's workout class in the area, etc. Be prepared.Â
- If you are having guests at your house, make them aware that your exercise routine is important to your health. Include them in your routine when possible. Make workouts a fun group activity if you enjoy that.Â
- Eat Healthy
- It’s ok to enjoy the treats that the season has to offer, but overall try to stick to your normal healthy eating routine.
- Take healthy snacks with you when you know you will be out and about.
- Remember that what you eat can greatly affect your symptoms. Sticking to your healthy eating plan will keep you healthy and give you more energy to enjoy the season.Â
- Get Plenty of Rest
- Eating, sleeping and taking medications are all very important to navigating life with Parkinson's. Your body needs to rest to repair itself and stay as healthy as you can.Â
- If traveling, build in rest days or downtime for yourself.Â
- Ensure that you get the proper time that you need for yourself and for sleep. Choose your activities mindfully to ensure your rest.Â
Most importantly, take care of yourself and have a wonderful holiday season!
