Dear CTY Alumni, Families, and Friends,
What an exciting time to join CTY! In my first few weeks as senior director of development and alumni relations I had the pleasure of visiting some of our On-Campus Programs sites around the country. Seeing the enthusiasm of our students in action was inspiring. During this special 45th anniversary year, I hope that you will join me in reflecting on CTY’s remarkable history of educating thousands of advanced learners and our bright future outlined in our Strategic Roadmap.

Join CTY for a three-day online colloquium showcasing CTY’s past, present, and future of research, including an AI in Action Demo and the Sustaining Excellence Initiative, which focuses on understanding and supporting the needs of advanced learners in the online classroom.

CTYers Past & Present Class Notes
|
Amina Cattaui ’11-’12, ’16-’19 recently attended the New England Literature Program, which takes students to New Hampshire for a backpacking adventure, and explored American Transcendentalism while being free from modern technology for the summer.
Edward “Eddie” Chen ’21 received the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts Award, an honor presented to only 20 high school seniors nationwide each year. This summer, Eddie attended the High-Level Political Forum at the United Nations in New York City as a youth delegate and taught hip hop dance workshops in Taipei, Taiwan.
Sophia Eowyn Hsu ’24 received the University of Toronto International Scholar Award.
Gabriel Murphy ’14-’16 started a full-time job at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in the Los Angeles field office after an internship with APL last summer. His team focuses on National Security Space.
Reyab Seluja ’17-’20 participated in Apocalypse Hacks, an event hosted by HackClub, a global nonprofit for high school computer hackers, makers, and coders. At this overnight hackathon, Reyab and his partner built a turret defense system using computer vision, two Arduinos, and four ESP-32s.
Ilana Walder-Biesanz ’04-’05 recently launched a new talent search non-profit, National Math Stars, and raised $16.5M in philanthropic funding to support their mission of ensuring mathematically extraordinary students from all communities access the resources they need to reach the frontiers of math and science.
Matthew Zakreski, PsyD '96-'00, clinical psychologist and speaker, will be launching his new book, Neurodiversity Playbook, this fall. Learn more about Zakreski and his research.

CTY College Advising Workshops Accepting Registrations
|
Join CTY for our new expert-led college admissions workshops that are designed specifically for advanced learners in grades 8 and above and their parents or caregivers. We’ll focus on some of the biggest issues in undergraduate admissions including how to write an admissions essay, build a college list, choose high school courses, and be a competitive applicant to highly selective schools.
These four free one-hour CTY online events are led by admissions experts from Collegewise. Each presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. Individual registration is required for each event in the series. Events will be recorded and posted on CTY’s YouTube page.

New Online Offerings Starting in January Now Enrolling
|
Enrollment is now open for 10 new rigorous, fresh, and fun online offerings for advanced learners starting in January 2025. Some courses are brand new, others are adapted from popular CTY on-campus courses. Whether your bright child loves math, sports, reading, history, or science, we’ve got something for them to dive into and explore.
These new offerings connect students with challenging coursework presented in ways you won’t often find in traditional classes, as well as an engaging community of advanced learners. New formats include challenge and mini courses. Other online courses for the first part of 2025 are also enrolling now.

This summer, CTY welcomed over 4,500 students to On-Campus Programs held at 9 residential and day sites throughout the U.S.—a 10% increase from summer 2023. Among these students, 61% were new to CTY, hailing from 44 countries, 45 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The largest site was at Loyola Marymount University, which hosted over 750 students.

CTY thanks our donors for supporting the program that helped shape their lives or the lives of their loved ones. Contributions to CTY come in all sizes, and these gifts provide financial aid, research support, curriculum development, enrichment programs, college preparation, academic advising, and more.
We are pleased to spotlight alumnus Max McGowen ’03-’05. Max made his first gift to the CTY Impact Fund, which allows CTY the flexibility to direct funds to areas of immediate need, capitalize on unexpected opportunities, and grow special initiatives. This Give Thanks Spotlight highlights Max’s motivation to support CTY.
