UTA Expands Efforts to Tackle Nursing Shortage
|
The University of Texas at Arlington, the state’s largest producer of baccalaureate-educated nurses, has received a grant to expand its efforts to address the critical nursing shortage in Texas and across the nation.
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recently approved more than $5 million in funding through its Nursing Shortage Reduction Program.

UTA Researchers Aim to Detect Heart Disease Early Using Sleep, Activity and Blood Pressure Data from Fitness Devices
|
Researchers at The University of Texas at Arlington are launching a two-year study to explore whether data from everyday fitness trackers can help predict a person’s risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Backed by a $400,000 grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the study officially started on Aug. 1 and will use commercially available wearable devices to monitor physical activity, sleep and blood pressure.
Yue Liao, a UTA assistant professor of kinesiology, is leading the study with co-investigators Christine Spadola, an assistant professor of social work; Souvik Roy, an associate professor of mathematics; and Matthew Brothers, a professor of kinesiology.

UTA Researchers Explore How Microplastics May Affect Muscle, Brain Health and Aging
in Real-World Settings

|
|
A new interdisciplinary research project at The University of Texas at Arlington is investigating how microplastics—tiny plastic particles found in food, water and everyday consumer products—may impact the health of aging adults, particularly in relation to muscle and brain function.
The study is led by Un-Jung Kim, assistant professor in UT Arlington’s College of Science, with collaboration from School of Social Work Assistant Professor and co-investigator Kathy Siepker and the College of Nursing and Health Innovation’s Bone-Muscle Research Center.
